Men's Basketball Earns 74-65 Win Against Manhattan
November 25, 2006 | Men's Basketball
Senior co-captain Brian Macon (Boynton Beach, Fla.) hit a key 3-pointer with 1:31 left and senior co-captain Omari Peterkin (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) drew a charge on the ensuing possession to hold off Manhattan and lead the Terriers to their second road win of the young season.
Lowe (Newton, Mass.) tied the school record with a 7-for-13 performance from behind the arc. He tied Matt Turner, who set the record twice - both times in the 2000-01 season. Red-shirt freshman Tyler Morris (Indianapolis, Ind.) continued with his solid offensive performances. He scored in double figures for the fourth straight game, contributing 15 points.
Macon handed out six assists in addition to five points. The Terriers also got quality minutes from freshman Valdas Sirutis (Gargzdai, Lithuania), who hit a pair of key free throws and grabbed several important rebounds. Despite Peterkin, sophomore Ibrahim Konate (Bamako, Mali) and freshman Scott Brittain (Oakville, Ont.) getting into foul trouble midway through the second half, BU still capitalized in the paint, scoring 28 points in the lane.
The Terriers took a 41-33 lead at 18:30, after Peterkin scored four straight points to open the second half. Manhattan came all the way back to tie the game at 46 on a lay in by Guy Ngarndi at 13:46. BU pushed its edge back to seven, 54-47, on a Lowe 3-pointer at 12:15. Morris converted a three-point play at 9:13 to give the Terriers a nine-point lead, 59-50.
The Jaspers got as close as three points, 62-59 at 4:37, on two free throws by Darryl Crawford, but Lowe hit his final three of the game at 3:37, exactly two minutes before Macon sunk his to put the game out of Manhattan's reach.
After Macon hit his trey and Peterkin drew the offensive foul, Manhattan resorted to the strategy of giving fouls. BU's Morris went 2-for-4 from the line, and Macon and Lowe each sunk both of their free throws in the final 40 seconds of the game to offset baskets in the lane from Crawford.
BU took an early lead on a Lowe three, 7-4, at 17:43. But Manhattan scored seven unanswered points to move past the Terriers, 11-7, at 15:00. A Konate putback snapped the run, 11-9 at 14:06. BU got within one, 15-14, on a trey by Morris at 11:57, but the Jaspers scored eight straight points over the next four minutes. Konate dropped in a basket off an inbounds play at 8:02 to stop the run.
The Terriers chipped away at the Jaspers' lead, getting a three from Lowe at 7:21 and a two from Konate before Lowe made the second of two free throws after a Manhattan technical foul. He sunk a three at 6:13 to get the Terriers within two, 27-25. BU tied it at 27 on an up-and-under by Konate at 4:55 and took a 31-30 lead on a pair of Brittain free throws at 2:17. But the Jaspers responded with a fast break lay up off a steal by Crawford to give themselves the advantage, 32-31, with 1:40 remaining before the half. The Terriers rallied with two Brittain baskets in the paint and a pair of free throws from Sirutis to take a 37-33 advantage into the half.
The Terriers complete their four-game road trip with a contest at St. Joseph's University on Monday, November 27 at 7 p.m.
