Men's Basketball Squares Off Against Manhattan On Saturday
November 25, 2006 | Men's Basketball
Both teams are coming off a loss heading into Saturday's contest. BU dropped a 73-54 decision to Northeastern University on Tuesday, Nov. 21 despite senior co-captain Omari Peterkin's (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) first career double double of 15 points and 14 rebounds. Red-shirt freshman Tyler Morris (Indianapolis, Ind.) and true freshman Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass.) each also scored in double figures.
Manhattan had its two-game win streak snapped by a 57-45 loss to Princeton on Wednesday, Nov. 22. The Jaspers are in their first year under new head coach Barry Rohrssen. Rohrssen comes to Manhattan after seven years as an assistant at the University of Pittsburgh.
BU-Manhattan History: The series between the Terriers and the Jaspers is short and sporadic. The two teams faced one another for the first time in 1932-33, when Manhattan took home a 32-21 victory. The Jaspers won the second contest of the four-game rivalry 56-43 during the 1941-42 season. BU and Manhattan did not face each other again until 1997-98 and 1998-99, with the Terriers winning the latter two games by one point, 6-059 in `97, and by a margin of 20 points, 66-46, in `98.
BU Vs. The MAAC: BU is 54-37 all-time against current members of the MAAC. The Terriers faced two MAAC teams this season, losing to Rider 66-60 on Nov. 18 and are at Manhattan on Saturday. A look at BU's all-time marks against the MAAC, with Wolff's career record in parentheses:
Canisius 13-8 (3-0)
Fairfield 5-4 (0-0)
Iona 2-2 (0-0)
Loyola College 1-0 (1-0)
Manhattan 2-2 (2-0)
Marist 2-1 (0-0)
Niagara 16-7 (0-0)
Rider 1-3 (1-3)
St. Peter's College 3-2 (2-0)
Siena 9-8 (0-0)
Hitting the Road: With Tuesday's game at Northeastern, BU kicked off a slate of four straight road games, out of a total 16. In fact, seven of the next eight games on the schedule, including tonight, will played away from either of BU's two homes. That may not be a bad thing. The Terriers are 1-1 on the road this season and half of their wins in 2005-06 came away from home.
Peterkin Puts Together First Career Double Double At Northeastern: Senior co-captain Omari Peterkin had 15 points and 14 rebounds in the Terriers' loss to Northeastern on Tuesday, Nov. 21 to record his first double double of his career. His rebound total shattered his previous career high of nine boards and his 15 points were four shy of his career high in that category.
Peterkin, Morris and Lowe Offensive Constants: Senior Omari Peterkin, red-shirt freshman Tyler Morris, and true freshman Corey Lowe have been key offensive contributors for the Terriers in the last three games. In each of the contests (Harvard, 11/14; Rider, 11/18; and Northeastern, 11/21) these three have scored ten or more points apiece. Morris led BU with 22 points at Harvard, followed by Lowe (14 pts) and Peterkin (11). Against Rider, Lowe and Morris each tallied 13 while Peterkin chipped in 12. At Northeastern, Peterkin led the team with 15 points followed by Morris (14 pts) and Lowe (10 pts).
Northeastern Notes:
• Due mainly to senior co-captain Omari Peterkin, BU dominated both points in the paint and second chance points. BU had a 20-12 scoring advantage in the paint and an 11-5 edge in second chance points.• Peterkin had a career-high 14 rebounds.
• The Terriers out-rebounded Northeastern 36-23, the first time BU has done so to an opponent this season.
• Red-shirt freshman Tyler Morris had 14 points against the Huskies, his third straight game in double figures.
• Peterkin led a strong effort off the bench for the Terriers, combining with Sherrod Smith to out-score NU's bench 19-1.
