Swimmers Hold Steady After Day Two of America East Championships

Day Two Results
BOSTON – The Boston University swimming and diving teams maintained their positions after day two of the America East Championships Friday, with the men sitting in fourth place and the women in third. The Championships are being held at the BU Aquatic Center and continue through Sunday afternoon.
The Terrier men have a total of 177 points and trail UMBC, which leads the event with 297.50 points. The Terriers lead fifth place Maine (137 points) by 40. On Friday, BU was led by senior Ryan Falk, who finished seventh in the 200 IM (1:57.02), less than three seconds behind champion David Holmes of Binghamton ( 1:49.31). In the 50 Free, the Terriers had a pair of swimmers in the finals event, with Mike Kelly garnering third place in 21.36, while fellow senior captain Mike McGrath placed sixth in 21.72. Finally, the Terrier 200-yard relay squad of Jonathan Melloul, Nick Paul, Kelly and McGrath, finished fourth in 1:27.09, less than four seconds behind team champion Binghamton (1:23.47).
On the women’s side, the Terriers remain in third place, with 214 points, behind team leader UMBC (275 points) and New Hampshire (259). Christina Ruggiero finished third in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:06.63, seven seconds behind medalist Meghan Sacket of UMBC (4:49.27). In the 200-yard IM, junior Lidija Breznikar finished third in 2:04.76, just behind champ Shannon Daly of UNH (2:02.28). Freshman Eve Kinsella was sixth in the same race at 2:08.84. In the 50-yard freestyle, Kila Englebrook placed fourth in 24.45, less than half a second behind champ Daniele Surkovich of UMBC, who won in a time of 24.02.
Freshman Alex Crearar won the Terriers’ first individual title with a victory in the three-meter diving. Crerar scored 485.25 points, nearly 10 points better than UMBC’s Ashley Houghton. Senior Megan White finished fourth with 441.15 points. Finally, in the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay, the Terrier team of Kila Englebrook, Meagan Breiland, Eve Kinsella and Natalie Boyd finished a close second with a time of 1:37.95, just a fraction of a second behind UMBC’s titlist squad of 1:37.05.
The America East Championships continue Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
