BOSTON - The 23rd-ranked Boston University men’s soccer team tied Penn State, 1-1, on Sunday afternoon in the Penn State Classic finale in University Park, Pa. Sophomore Neil Hlavaty scored the Terrier's goal in the 27th minute and senior goalkeeper Zach Riffett collected six saves, including two in overtime. The Terriers stand at 4-0-2 on the season, while Penn State owns a 1-4-1 overall record.
The Terriers took the lead at 26:34 when sophomore Paul Mignogna (Tarrytown, N.Y.) and Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill) executed a give-and-go from the right flank. The goal was Hlavaty's second of the season and Mignogna’s first career point.
The Nittany Lions knotted the game at one in the 66th minute, when Barkley Miller dished the ball of to Simon Omekanda who made a precise pass to Jason Yeisley. Yeisley chipped it over Riffett for the game-tying goal.
Riffett (Brenham, Texas) made two important saves during the second overtime period to preserve the tie.
Penn State held a 19-5 advantage in shots and earned 15 corner kicks.
Junior Derek Puerta (Pawtucket, R.I.), senior Steven Gahl (Kensington, Md.) and Riffett were named to the Penn State Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Terriers return to Nickerson Field on Thursday, Sept. 14 when they host Brown University at 7 p.m.
