
Men???s Soccer Takes on URI in Wednesday Doubleheader

BOSTON - The Boston University men’s soccer team (4-1-3) continues its homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 20 with the University of Rhode Island (2-2-3) at 7 p.m. The Terriers will play in their final of three consecutive home games against long-standing rival Rhode Island. The match is the second in a doubleheader with the women's squad.
The series with Rhode Island dates back to the 1963 season and has continued every season, with the exception of the 2000 and 2001 seasons when the two teams did not meet. BU holds the 18-15-8 advantage all-time.
The Terriers began last week with a 1-1 tie with Penn State in the fonal game of the Penn State Nike Classic. On Thursday, Sept. 14, the men’s squad dropped its first game of the season, 1-0, to Brown with one minute remaining in regulation. Most recently, BU tied Cornell 1-1 on Sunday, Sept. 17.
Senior goalkeeper Zach Riffett (Brenham, Texas) owns a 0.57 goals-against-average and .884 save percentage. Sophomore Petur Sigurdsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) continues to lead the offense with fours and one assist.
URI is led by Jeffrey Gonsalves with nine points, while Mark Sauter and Chris Pennock have shared netminding duties this season. Sauter has played in five games and started in four, earning a 1.12 goals-against-average and .714 save percentage. Pennock has made two starts, compiling a 0.82 GAA and .750 save percentage.
The men’s team begins its conference schedule on Saturday, Sept. 23, when it travels to Baltimore, Md., to take on UMBC at 1 p.m.
