BOSTON - Senior Zack Kirby (Marietta, Ga.) was drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the 2007 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft on Thursday, Jan. 18. The ninth pick in the sixth round, Kirby becomes the fourth Boston University men’s soccer player to be taken in the MLS draft.
The Galaxy, the 2003 and 2005 MLS Cup champions, recently acquired former Manchester United and Real Madrid star David Beckham. Kirby joins Francis Okaroh (’87), Mike Emenalo (’90) and current New England Revolution player Andy Dorman (’04) in the professional ranks.
A captain in the backfield, Kirby helped lead the 2006 Terrier defense to eight shutouts and limit opponents to one or fewer goals in 18-of-19 games. BU’s 12 goals allowed during the year was one short of the school record set in 1985.
“I’m really excited for Zach,” said head coach Neil Roberts. “He was a solid, steady defender for us. He had a great career, and I think the great thing for him is that he isn’t finished developing his skills. He has the chance to turn into a very good pro player.”
Kirby played in 72 games during his career, earning America East Defender of the Year honors in 2006, NSCAA All-New England Second Team in 2005, and NSCAA All-New England Third Team in 2004. Kirby, a two-time Second Team All-America East, totaled three goals, and two assists for eight points.
Kirby will begin training with the Galaxy in early February in preparation of the 2007 MLS season.
