BOSTON – The Boston University swimming and diving program swept cross-town rival Boston College on Tuesday evening as the men’s team posted a 152-139 victory, while the women’s side won by a 190-110 margin. Crucial wins from James Lands, Ben Kaiser and Griffin Moodie, along with Arik Seiler’s lifetime best in the 200 IM helped lift the Terriers over the Eagles, while the women had 12 individual victories – including both boards.
The win was the second consecutive for the men's squad, which is now 3-6 in dual-meet action, while the women now stand at 8-1.
Kaiser picked up BU’s first individual win in the 1,000 free, swimming a career-best nine minutes, 49.27 seconds, while Kyle Berg and Greg Dierksen went 1-2 in the 200 free, with Dierksen clocking in at 1:49.06 – a season-low.
Seiler scored points for the Terriers in the 100 back with a 54.14 first-place time, and Moodie picked up his first of two individual wins in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 59.61 seconds. Moodie won his second race later on in the meet with a winning time of 2:14.62 in the 200 breaststroke – also a season-best. Seiler also swam his top 100 free of the 2006-07 campaign with a 47.52 finish.
Lands turned in his best in-season performance in the 200 fly with a winning time of 1:57.36, while Kaiser and John Passaro followed up in third and fourth place in the event. Passaro dropped nearly four seconds off his previous season-low with a time of 2:02.73.
Brian Lawler, fresh off earning AE Diver of the Week accolades, continued to own the one- and three-meter boards with two wins.
In the 500 free, Kaiser won his second individual race with a time of 4:48.74, followed by Dierksen in 4:53.29 and Michael Bear in fourth place. Bear’s time of 4:59.38 was over five seconds quicker than his previous season-low.
For the women, Christina Ruggiero won the 1000 free in 10:23.71, placed third in the 50 free (25.23) and was victorious in the 500 free in a time of 5:07.32. Sophomore Eve Kinsella maintained her prominence in the 200 free with a winning time of 1:52.66 and picked up a second-place finish in the 100 free. In the 200 IM, Kinsella was second to teammate Lidija Breznikar, who finished in 2:07.70.
Breznikar was also victorious in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 1:06.97. Ali Chester was BU’s top finisher in the 100 and 200 back, while also swimming in the opening leg in the winning 200-medley relay team.
Megan White claimed the one-meter board, while teammate Alex Crerar picked up the win in the three-meter, to complete the sweep of all the diving events.
Boston University will host the 2007 America East Swimming and Diving Championships at BU’s Competition Pool on Feb. 8-11.
