BOSTON - In a meeting of two former conference foes, the Boston University men's basketball team travels to Newark, Del., to face Delaware on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. The Terriers (3-6) and the Blue Hens (2-5, 1-0 CAA) have not met in seven years after facing off for 11 straight seasons.
The all-time series began in 1976 but took a break until 1990 when the teams were both in the North Atlantic Conference (pre-cursor to the America East). It was contested annually until Delaware left the AE for the Colonial Athletic Association in 2001. The Fightin' Blue Hens are currently on a seven-game win streak that dates back to the 1998 season.
The Blue Hens began 2007-08 with four straight losses before rebounding with a pair of wins over CAA foe Towson and Albany. UDel then lost two more against Ohio University and Central Connecticut State. Delaware has a game on Wednesday against another former conference opponent Vermont at 7 p.m. The Blue Hens have four players averaging double figures, led by Herb Courtney's 14.6 ppg. Courtney is also UDel's leading rebounder with 5.3 boards per game. The Bob Carpenter Center has been kind to Delaware - the Blue Hens are 2-1 at home and 0-5 on the road.
Sophomore guard and reigning two-time America East Player of the Week Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass.) is BU's leading scorer with 20.0 points per game. He has scored 20 or more points in three straight games and is coming off a career-high 35 at Yale on Dec. 11. Classmates Carlos Strong (Portland, Maine) and Scott Brittain (Oakville, Ont.) are the other two Terriers in double figures. Strong averages 14.4 ppg, while Brittain averages 10.6 ppg and a team-best 5.9 rpg. He is shooting 58.3 percent from the floor (35-for-60) to rank third in the America East.
The Terriers won their second consecutive game - and first road contest - with a 76-67 victory over Yale last week. The Bulldogs went ahead 5-0 early in the first half, but BU went on a 17-4 run, keyed by the first of Lowe's seven threes, to take the lead for good. The Terriers ran out to a 27-14 lead after two Yale turnovers led to a Brittain lay up and a Strong three at 6:33 in the first. During that rally Lowe went on a personal 9-0 run, hitting three straight treys. Yale came out strong in the second half and cut the lead to eight, 38-30, at 17:47. However, Lowe and Strong combined to score BU's first 14 points as the Terriers continued to force Yale turnovers and maintain their lead for the rest of the game.
Boston University breaks for the holidays before going to UMass on Dec. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
