HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior Chiya Louie blasted two home runs over the fence and freshman pitcher Megan Currier went the distance as the Boston University softball team took Sunday’s rubber match at Hartford, 7-3. The Terriers improve to 30-11 overall and 14-3 in America East action, while the Hawks fall to 20-22 and 10-7 in conference play.
Currier improved to 17-3 on the mound with another standout performance. The Torrance, Calif., native pitched her 17th complete game of the season striking out a season-high five batters, issuing three walks and allowing just two earned runs in seven innings of work.
Louie led offensively hitting 3-for-3 with two homers and two runs batted in. Sophomores Christy Leath and Nora Militz were 2-for-4 and Leath knocked in two runs on a single and a long ball.
The Terriers never trailed in the contest going up by one run in the first inning on Louie’s two-out solo shot to left field. They added two more in the third inning when Leath’s single to center field drove in sophomore Brooke Hudson and freshman Rachel Hebert’s sacrifice fly to center field plated sophomore Shayne Lotito.
Hartford responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on four hits to draw to within one run. However, with the bases loaded Currier forced Hartford’s Olivia Piacentini to ground out to third base and end the threat.
BU tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth with back-to-back homers by Louie and Leath. Hartford made one last attempt to rally in the fifth on a solo home run, however, two consecutive ground outs ended the inning.
In the sixth and seventh the Terriers pushed two more across the plate on RBI singles by senior Brandi Shields and Militz to round out the scoring, 7-3.
The Terriers face cross-town rival Boston College on Wednesday, May 2 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. before heading to Burlington, Vt., for their final regular-season series with Vermont on Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6. First pitch is set for noon on Saturday.
