PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Continuing an eight-game road trip, the Boston University softball team dropped a 4-1 decision at Providence Wednesday afternoon.
The Friars (20-14) were limited to just one hit through the first five innings by senior Haley Ganino (6-2) but were able to deliver a pair of solo homers in the sixth to jump ahead for good against the Terriers (34-12), who had their eight-game win streak snapped.
Junior Kylie Doherty led BU with a pair of hits, including an RBI blast toward center in the third inning that was just inches away from being her 20th homer and instead ended up as her seventh double of the season. Senior Brooke Deppiesse recorded a single and walk along with the run scored, while junior Sophie Naivar earned a double and classmate Livia Christopher tallied a single.
In the circle, Ganino pitched 4.2 no-hit innings before the Friars earned a single in the bottom of the fifth. After starting the bottom of the sixth with two homers, Providence added a run apiece against sophomores Danika Nell and Ava Johnson.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The defense stepped up the first couple of innings with junior Kyomi Apalit making an impressive diving stop at short and toss to second
- Junior Livia Christopher followed in the second by throwing a runner out attempting to steal second, and senior Megan Coyle made a full out diving catch in front of the Providence dug out.
- In the third with two outs, Deppiesse singled up the middle and scored on Doherty's RBI double.
- Trying to extend the lead, Naivar had a double in the fourth and the offense loaded the bases in the fifth, but the Friars recorded two double plays to keep the deficit at one run.
- The Friars first caught a hard liner toward short and touched second for the force, and they followed in the fifth by catching a fly ball to right and throwing the ball to home in time for the tag.
- Providence had a chance to score by advancing a runner to second in both the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, but Ganino earned a ground out to second to stay ahead, 1-0.
- The Friars then rallied in the sixth with four runs off two homers, four walks and a hit-by-pitch to pull out the victory.
- Doherty increased her career RBI total to 147, two behind Deppiesse with Alex Heinen ('19) owning the program record at 155.
- Doherty earned her 16th multi-hit performance of the season with Deppiesse in the lead at 19 total.
- BU dropped to 5-3 this season when allowing multiple homers in a game this season with Providence joining Marshall as the only teams to accomplish the feat twice. The Terriers recorded a split against both programs.
- Providence cut the Terriers' series lead to 27-18-2 by avenging last week's 8-7 loss at BU.
- BU will remain on the road and resume Patriot League play at Army West Point with Saturday's (April 18) doubleheader and Sunday's (April 19) single contest both slated for a 12 p.m. start time.\
- The Terriers are currently atop the PL standings at 11-1, while the Black Knights are 6-3.
- Last season, BU went 1-2 at home with a 4-1 win and pair of losses, 6-5 (9) and 10-1 (5), but bounced back against the regular season champion Black Knights in the PL tournament with an 8-0 (6) win and 3-2 come-from-behind victory for the title.
