BOSTON - After resetting 13 lifetime bests, the Boston University swimming and diving teams got off to a great start on Saturday afternoon as the men's and women's programs swept Massachusetts at Competition Pool. The women won by a 148-93 margin, while the men defeated the Minutemen, 134-109. On the women's side, BU picked up 10 first-place finishes, including two from senior Eve Kinsella, while the men won five events and swept two.
To start the meet, the women's 400-medley relay team picked up the squad's first win, clocking in at three minutes, 56.78 minutes. Sophomore Sarah Doersam swam the lead off leg, followed by freshman Kristen Connors, sophomore Kirsten Tullis and sophomore Maria McIntyre.
In the next event, the Terriers kept the momentum going with a sweep in the 1000 free, as freshman Amanda Schmitz (10:36.45), sophomore Clara Van Allen (10:38.90; lifetime best) and junior Liisa Young (10:41.58) took the top three spots. Junior Emily Munday claimed first place with a 24.54 finish in the 50 free, which was also lifetime best.
Kinsella and Tullis combined for a 1-2 finish in the 200 IM, and Kinsella later swam to a first-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 52.82. She was followed by Munday (53.55). In the second sweep of the afternoon, freshman Francesca Ferrante (2:10.65), junior Brigette O'Shaughnessy (2:13.19) and sophomore Andrea Doersam (2:14.81) extended BU's lead to 96-54 through 17 events. Doersam's time of 2:14.81 shaved over four seconds off a lifetime best.
Senior Christina Ruggiero, Schmitz and Young gave BU its third sweep of first, second and third with times of 5:13.13, 5:14.38 and 5:16.32, respectively. Connors closed out the individual races with a victory in the 200 breaststroke, clocking in at 2:20.02. Senior Tess Waresmith swept both diving events with wins on the 1M (288.90) and the 3M (314.40).
On the men's side, the 400-medley relay team of sophomores Bryon Kallert, Kyle Ernst, Matt Rickett, and freshman Sam Weinstein edged out UMass with a time of 3:29.08 - just over two seconds ahead of the next closest finisher. Juniors Ben Kaiser and Tyson Slesnick took second and third in the 1000 free with times of 9:55.45 and 10:04.47, respectively, to stay ahead of the Minutemen.
In the 50 free, freshman Daniel Kempf, Rickett and Weinstein picked up points with second-, third- and fourth-place finishes. A crucial sweep of the 200 IM helped the men's squad pull away from UMass, as junior Arik Seiler, Ernst and sophomore Peter Lo went 1-2-3. Seiler's time of 1:55.36 was a lifetime best for the Portland, Maine native.
Kallert took BU's third first-place finish of the afternoon, clocking in with a time of 1:54.74. In the final individual race of the afternoon, Ernst, Lo and Slesnick swept the 200 breaststroke. In the final event, the Terriers won the 400-free relay in 3:08.30.
In the diving events, Andre Watson picked up a first place on the 1M (321.38) and took second on the 3M (333.83).
