BOSTON - The Boston University women's soccer team and head coach Nancy Feldman have announced that rising seniors Shannon Mullen and Elizabeth Speck have been selected as co-captains for the 2008 season. The two upperclassmen will look to lead the Terriers to their fourth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament and sixth America East Conference championship in nine years.
"Liz and Shannon offer complementary characteristics with regard to their leadership styles, but both know what it takes to be successful as student-athletes and what it will take to be successful as a team next fall," said Feldman.
Mullen has started 39-of-49 games over the last three seasons as a central defender and has anchored a backline that ranked 12th nationally in goals-against average (0.59) in 2007, while allowing the fewest goals (13) in the America East. The Dallas, Texas, native also notched two goals for the Terriers, including the game-winning tally at Maine on Oct. 11.
"Liz and Shannon both bring terrific natural leadership qualities and have the respect of both their peers and the coaching staff," Feldman continued. "They bring a vocal element to leadership and lead by example."
Speck, a native of Rockville Centre, N.Y., will return for her second stint as the squad's captain after serving in the same capacity in 2007. She has seen action in 49 games in three years as an outside defender and last year helped the Terriers distinguish themselves as the stingiest backline in the conference with a league-high 10 shutouts.
"We are excited to have these two quality people, players and competitors as captains for next year's team," concluded Feldman.
The women's soccer team opens the season at Nickerson Field on August 23 when it hosts cross-town rival Boston College at 7:00 p.m.
