Minneapolis, Minn. - The Boston University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday evening on the first day of the Minnesota Gold Classic. Sophomore goalkeeper Janie Reilly made two saves, including a penalty kick in the second half, and classmate Corie Halasz recorded four shots, however, the Panthers scored two unanswered goals in the second half to earn the victory. BU falls to 4-4 on the season, while UWM improves to 7-1-1.
The game-winning goal came in the 57th minute as the Panthers drew a penalty kick following a BU foul in the box. Reilly made the initial stop, but on the ensuing corner kick six seconds later UWM's Sarah Hagen headed home her 10th goal of the season. The Panther's added to their lead with six minutes remaining in regulation as Kate Megna back-heeled the insurance tally off a cross from Beth Steuter.
To start the game, BU controlled the run of play, out-shooting Milwaukee, 6-1, in the first half. Reilly was tested once and the sophomore netminder came up with the stop to maintain the clean sheet. Senior Marisha Schumacher-Hodge nearly found the back of the net in the 44th minute, but her shot hit the post and both teams went into the locker rooms at halftime in a scoreless deadlock.
In the second half, UWM came out aggressive offensively and drew the penalty kick at 56:18 that led up to the Panthers goal. Following the goal, BU did not relent as Halasz pressed forward and recorded four shots in a nine minute span. UWM's defense withstood the pressure and at 84:06 Kate Megna netted her third goal of the season to provide the insurance.
BU held the 11-7 advantage in shots, while the Panthers drew four corner kicks to the Terriers' two.
BU will face host Minnesota on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. on the final day of the tourney.
