Princeton, N.J. - The Boston University women's soccer team (1-3-0) fell to Princeton, 2-1, on Friday evening, as the Tigers scored two unanswered goals in the second half to pick up the win in the season opener at Myslik Field. Junior Farrell McClernon scored the Terriers' lone tally midway through the second half with classmate Casey Brown picking up the assist.
McClernon broke the scoreless deadlock when she unloaded a shot from the top of the box at 69:20 off a feed from Brown; however, the lead was short-lived as Princeton responded two minutes later when Sarah Peteraf maneuvered past two defenders and slide the ball into the net to knot the game at one. The Tigers tallied the game-winning goal with 1:06 remaining in regulation as Lisa Chinn tipped the ball in at the far post off a cross from Bernie Da Costa.
The first half was played evenly as both teams recorded four shots and each respective goalkeeper was forced to make one stop. Junior Mara Osher tested Princeton's Alyssa Pont with 40 seconds remaining in the frame with a shot on goal; however, both squad's went into the break scoreless after 45 minutes of action.
In the second half, BU came out on the offensive with two quick shots, and the Terriers' hard work paid off with McClernon's goal in the 70th minute. Brown had fed a pass to McClernon, whose shot from the top of the box sailed in under the cross bar for her first goal of the season. At 71:54 Princeton struck back with Peteraf's goal, and with just over a minute remaining in regulation, Chinn's strike from the far post sealed the victory for the Tigers.
BU held the slight 11-10 advantage in shots and 8-6 edge in corner kicks, while sophomore Janie Reilly made two saves in net for the Terriers.
BU will travel to Connecticut on Sunday, Sept. 7, for a 3 p.m. kick off.
