Durham, N.H. - Senior Farrell McClernon broke a scoreless deadlock midway through the second half as the Boston University women's soccer team (6-4-2, 2-0-0 AE) shutout New Hampshire (1-9-1, 0-2-0 AE), 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at Lewis Field. Senior Janie Reilly made five saves to earn the blank sheet.
Freshman Megan McGoldrick picked up the assist on the game winner - her third of the season - and the Terriers' defense has now recorded back-to-back shutouts.
After going 60 minutes without a goal, BU broke through in the 61st when McGoldrick fed McClernon a pass just outside the 18-yard box, which she collected then weaved through UNH defenders. UNH's Ally Yost came off her line to stop the near breakaway, but the ball came loose and McClernon slid it in for her third goal of the season.
In the first half, the Terriers dominated possession in the early going with the play remaining in the Wildcats defensive third. Through the first 15 minutes, BU outshot UNH, 5-1, putting two on goal. Senior Emily Pallotta nearly put one away in the 20th minute when she scooped up a rebound, but the attempt went high. BU continued to maintain possession, stringing together passes and drawing the game's first corner kick.
The Wildcats started to gain some momentum in the 30th minute, pushing forward more and unleashing a handful of shots towards BU's goal that went high. At the end of the first stanza, BU held the 9-5 advantage in shots, with Reilly coming up with two saves and UNH's Ally Yost handling three.
In the second half, sophomore Tiya Gallegos unleashed a great attempt with a hard strike to the far right side that Yost saved, and moments later McClernon broke the scoreless deadlock with her game winner.
BU will travel to Maine on Sunday (Oct. 4) at 1 p.m.
