
Swimming and Diving Splits with UMass in Season Opener

Amherst, Mass. - The Boston University swimming and diving program opened its 2009-10 campaign on Saturday afternoon at UMass, where the women's team defeated the Minutewomen by a 175-118 margin. The men's meet came down to the last event; however, UMass came out on top, 153-147. Senior Emily Munday broke a pool record in the 50 free with a time of 24.34.
The women claimed first place in 10 events and the freshman class stood out with four first-place finishes. To get things started the 200-medley relay clocked in at 1:48.67. Senior Brigette O'Shaughnessy and freshman Megan Happ kept the ball rolling with a 1-2 finish in the 1,000 free. Freshman Lauren Drake won her first collegiate event, touching the wall in 1:54.16 in the 200 free.
In the 100 back, freshman Kara Zebrowski claimed top honors with a time of 59.65, while sophomore Kristen Connors won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.68. Later on, Connors claimed her second event of the meet with a 2:25.26 finish in teh 200 breaststroke. In the 200 fly, sophomores Amanda Schmitz and Sarah Doersam went 1-2 with times of 2:07.86 and 2:09.48, respectively.
Munday, Kirsten Tullis and Drake swept the top three spots in the 50 free, while freshmen Katie Radin and Zebrowski went 1-2 in the 200 back.
In the 500 free, Schmitz, Doersam and Happ swept first, second and third with times of 5:04.66, 5:10.91 and 5:14.18, respectively.
In the diving events, freshman Melinda Matyas won the one- and three-meter with a score of 271.28.
The Terriers return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1:30 pm, when they host Maine at Competition Pool.
