LOWELL, Mass. - Junior Colby Cohen netted the game-winning goal with 1:06 remaining in overtime to lead the No. 4 Boston University men's hockey team to a 5-4 victory over UMass Lowell on Friday night at Tsongas Arena. Sophomore David Warsosky scored two goals for the Terriers, who improve to 2-2-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in Hockey East play. The loss puts the River Hawks at 3-2-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in league play.
After trailing 3-2 entering the third period, the Terriers got a goal from senior Zach Cohen just 1:49 into the third to tie the contest. Warsofsky scored his second goal of the game with 5:38 left in regulation to give BU a 4-3 lead, but UMass Lowell tied it up just over a minute later to send the game into overtime.
BU took full advantage of a Lowell penalty in overtime, as Colby Cohen converted a give-and-go with junior Kevin Shattenkirk to end the game and lift the Terriers to their second victory in as many games.
Despite two power-play opportunities for each team, neither squad was able to get on the board in the first. The River Hawks turned up the pressure after a BU penalty with 23 seconds left in the period, but stymied a handful of close range shots, including one after losing his stick, to preserve the 0-0 score into the first break.
The River Hawks were knocking on the door to open the second, but it was BU who struck first on a counter attack. After three gutsy saves from BU goaltender Kieran Millan on a Lowell push, freshman Alex Chiasson jumped on a loose puck at center ice, took a hard line into the opposing zone and beat Lowell goalie Carter Hutton top shelf for his third goal of the season at 13:18. A Chris Connolly breakaway a minute later nearly put the guests up 2-0, but Hutton was able to stuff the sophomore's attempt.
The River Hawks didn't wait long to equalize, as Paul Worthington took feeds from captain Ben Holstrom and Nick Schaus and beat Millan to knot the score at one at the 9:55 mark.
Things looked dim for the guests after two penalties put the Terriers a man down on four-on-three and five-on-four situations, but the BU counter-attack struck again. Connolly carried the puck past center ice and into the Lowell zone on a two-on-two and threaded a pass to Warsofksy, who slapped home the go-ahead score at 8:09 for his first goal of the year.
The hosts were once again quick to equalize, knotting the score at two-apiece two minutes later. Michael Scheu beat Millan for his first goal of the year off assists from David Vallorani and Ryan Blair. The River Hawks netted another score at the 4:10 mark, but the play was reviewed and negated as the puck was kicked into the net.
The guests were able to pot one that stood with 2:36 left in the period to take a 3-2 lead into the break. Vallorani ripped a shot on that rebounded off Millan and hung in the crease and Michael Budd stuffed home the loose puck.
The lead didn't last long for the hosts as the Terriers fired back just 1:49 into the third. Zach Cohen took a pass from Corey Trivino at the top of the left circle and whipped in a wrist shot that ricocheted off the far post and in to knot the score at three-all. The goal marked Cohen's second on the season and Trivino's third assist.
With 5:38 remaining in the game, the Terriers recaptured the lead on Warsofsky's second tally of the game. Zach Cohen hauled in a ricochet off the back board and slid a pass to a wide-open Warsofsky who jammed the puck home for a 4-3 lead. The lead evaporated just over a minute later as the hosts answered with a Schaus goal at 4:13 to push the score to 4-4 and force the overtime period.
After recording a career-high 33 saves against Michigan last Saturday, Millan followed up by stopping 32 shots against the River Hawks.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at Agganis Arena in a 7 p.m. game.
