POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Led by Corey Lowe's season-high 27 points and Jake O'Brien's third career double-double off 10 points and 11 rebounds, the Boston University men's basketball team earned its first road win of the season with an 88-72 victory at Marist. Hitting a program-tying 15 3-pointers, the Terriers improve to 4-6, while the Red Foxes drop their home opener to fall to 0-7.
John Holland also had a big day with 21 points and three steals, while Jeff Pelage added 10 rebounds. Tyler Morris contributed 14 points, as the Terriers finished 32-for-57 (.561) from the field and 15-for-25 (.600) at the 3-point line.
Marist had three players score in double figures, led by Candon Rusin with 15 points. Rob Johnson had 13, and Devin Price contributed 12. Korey Baurer and Daye Kaba each posted a team-high six rebounds. The Red Foxes shot 25-for-51 (.490) from the field and only went 2-for-11 from beyond the arc in the second half to finish 8-for-21 (.381).
After Marist jumped out to a 6-2 lead off a 3-pointer from Dejuan Goodwin at 18:44, the Terriers stormed to a 13-0 run that was capped by three consecutive 3-pointers from Holland, Lowe and Carlos Strong. The Red Foxes tallied the next seven points to trail 15-13 at 13:19 but would never get any closer, as BU responded with seven straight points en route to a 12-2 run for a 27-15 lead with 8:37 remaining.
Lowe drained four 3-pointers in the final eight minutes of the half, including one with three seconds left, to give the Terriers a 49-34 lead entering the locker room. BU was 19-for-29 (.655) from the field and a blistering 11-for-17 (.647) from beyond the arc. Marist also shot well, going 6-for-10 at the 3-point line and 13-for-24 (.542) from the field, but committed 11 turnovers to fall behind.
In the second stanza, the Red Foxes were only able to get the deficit as low as 15. Rob Johnson hit a 3-pointer and then a jumper to put the score at 64-49 with 11:22 left, but the Terriers made sure there was no chance of a late rally, as Lowe hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cap a 10-3 run at 7:33.
BU finished the game with a 38-28 edge in rebounds though ended up losing the turnover battle, 19-18. The Terriers also had an off day at the charity stripe, going 9-for-20 (.450) after entering the game with a 75 percent shooting percentage.
Already the school record holder for made 3-pointers, Lowe surpassed Kenny Boyd ('74) for sixth-place all-time in the BU record book for career points with 1,468. Paul Hendricks ('87) is within striking distance at No. 5 with 1,527. Also contributing seven assists in the game to reach 318, Lowe only needs 14 more to reach the top 10 in the category.
Following the win over the Red Foxes, BU improves to 3-1 in the all-time series and 60-38 overall against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schools.
The Terriers will now focus on exams and will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 22, in Case Gymnasium against Mount St. Mary's with action set to start at 7 p.m.
