CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The reigning America East Rookie of the Year, sophomore Jake O'Brien earned his first career player of the week award by leading the Boston University men's basketball team to a 86-77 victory over Northeast Conference preseason favorite Mount St. Mary's last Tuesday, the league announced Monday. The sophomore forward led BU with 21 points and six boards to help extend the Terriers' win streak to three games.
Despite playing only 18 minutes due to foul trouble, O'Brien shot 7-of-9 from the field and shot 6-of-8 on free throw attempts to post a season high in points.
A three-time America East Rookie of the Week last season, O'Brien is joined by teammate John Holland and Vermont's Marqus Blakely as the only players to rank in the conference's top 15 in both scoring (12th - 13.1 ppg) and rebounding (5th - 6.5 rpg). He's also second with 1.6 blocks per contest and fourth by making 82.2 percent of his free throw tries.
The award marks the second of the season for BU. Holland earned the honor back on Nov. 23 after averaging 22.0 ppg and 6.5 rpg during the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
The Terriers will next face preseason Atlantic 10 opponent Dayton for the first time ever on Tuesday with action set for 7 p.m. at the UD Arena.
