Terriers Finish Second at Connecticut Spring Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - Junior Jan Bicanic posted top-two finishes in two throwing events to help the Boston University men's outdoor track and field team to a second-place finish at the Connecticut Spring Invitational on Saturday at the George Sherman Family Sports Complex. Bicanic won the discus throw, while sophomore Joel Senick captured the 400m dash, freshman Balint Horvath was the top collegian in the 1,500m run and junior Mac-Alen Gerard took the triple jump.
The Terriers tallied 46 points, behind only the 113 points collected by host Connecticut. Brown (25 points) and Quinnipiac (5) rounded out the meet.
Bicanic and sophomore Dan Withrow each scored in two throwing events. Bicanic won the discus throw with a season-best 49.40m mark and was second in the shot put with a 15.53m throw. Withrow was second in the discus with a 48.10m mark and third among collegians, fifth overall, in the shot put at 15.34m.
Senick won the 400m dash in 48.87 to lead a field of 10. Senick also finished fourth overall and third among collegians in the 200m dash in 22.04.
Senior Chadd Steinhauser came in second in the 800m run with a time of 1:52.42. Horvath was third overall, but first among collegians, in the 1,500m run with a 3:58.77. Sophomore Ken Haltom was just behind, coming in at 3:58.78.
The Terriers' 4x100m relay team finished second with a time of 43.79. Senior Jason Nardella was fourth overall and third among collegians in the 110m hurdles at 15.77 and junior Mark Mazzochette was second in the 400m hurdles with a 56.67.
Junior Kodjo Wilder was fourth overall and third among collegians in the long jump with a leap of 6.84m. Gerard was the only collegiate competitor to post a valid mark in the triple jump and tallied a season-best 13.95m to qualify for New England Championships.
The Terriers are back in action next weekend, competing at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
