Brookline, Mass. - Despite controlling the run of play, the Boston University women's soccer team (2-4-2) was edged, 1-0, by Northeastern (5-1-0) on Friday night at Parsons Field. The Terriers hit the underside of the cross bar with under six minutes remaining in regulation, however, an unlucky bounce preserved the shutout for the Huskies.
After finding itself in a 1-0 hole heading into the second half, BU upped its game and applied a constant pressure to NU's defense for the final 45 minutes. With 5:46 remaining, senior Farrell McClernon unleashed a rocket that was heading straight for the back of the net, but hit the underside of the cross bar and bounced back into the 18-yard box.
BU outshot NU, 15-9, led by freshman Megan McGoldrick with four and McClernon with three. The Terriers also held the 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Huskies struck first with a goal in the ninth minute on their first offensive push as Veronica Napoli took a pass from Sandra Magnusdottir and fired off a shot from 14-yards out into the lower left side. Following the goal, however, BU did not relent, quickly recovering and bringing the ball down the field as sophomore Jessica Luscinski sent dangerous crosses into the box on back-to-back possessions.
In the 26th minute, BU continued its pressure on the Huskies' defense and nearly broke through as senior Taleen Dimirdjian's shot went just wide right of the net. In a nice individual display a few minutes later, McGoldrick maneuvered around NU's defense, moving in and around the defenders and unleashed a curving shot to the far left post but her attempt went to past the post. After 45 minutes of action, senior Reilly collected three saves on four shots, while the Terriers held the slight 8-6 advantage in total shots.
In the second stanza, Reilly continued her strong play making a handful of crucial diving saves that kept BU within one goal. The Terriers upped their offensive pressuring, controlling much of the run of play, however, the Huskies were able to withstand it in the final third.
With just under 10 minutes remaining, junior Corie Halasz sent a beautiful ball into the box that McGoldrick got a head on that skimmed just past the far post. The Terriers continued the onslaught as McClernon rocketed a shot from 18-yards out that hit the underside of the cross bar and bounced out with under six minutes remaining in regulation, which proved to be the final scoring threat.
BU will host cross-town rival Harvard on Sunday (Sept. 20) at Nickerson Field for a 5 p.m. kick-off on Fox Soccer Channel.
