Newton, Mass. - The Boston University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 16 Boston College on Wednesday night at Newton Soccer Field. The Eagles scored one goal in each half as they improved to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Terriers suffered their first loss of the year and fall to 2-1-0.
After being held without a shot in the first half, the Terriers came storming out of the gates in the second stanza, unleashing seven shots - five on frame.
BC struck first in the 24th minute when freshman Victoria DiMartino collected the ball off an attempted clearance at the top of the 18-yard box, took it in a few steps and then slotted it into the far right side of the net.
BC continued to pressure the Terriers' defense and in the 30th minute nearly struck again when a cross landed right in BU's six-yard box, but junior Corie Halasz cleared away the loose ball that was headed towards the back of the net.
The Terriers first close opportunity came in the 36th minute when freshman Megan McGoldrick sent in a long cross from the right side that an aggressive Jillian Mastrioanni, BC's netminder, came off her line to cut off. With just over two minutes left in the first half, senior goalie Janie Reilly came off her line to punch out an attempted BC cross that the Eagles were looking to connect on right behind her.
To start the second half, BU threatened early on when sophomore Jessica Luscinski stepped up to take a free kick just outside the 18-yard box and sent a dangerous ball deep into the box that ended with a flurry in front of the net and the BC defense clearing it out.
The Terriers continued to press forward as Luscinski came streaking down the right flank and connected on a pass from senior Emily Pallotta. She then went to cross the ball but the Eagles' defense deflected it out. BU continued its onslaught on the ensuing corner kick as senior Casey Brown's header ricocheted off the post and less than a minute later Halasz sent a rocket towards the goal that Mastrioanni scooped up.
Tooley who took over netminding duties in the second half and came up with a clutch save with under 10 minutes remaining when Julia Bouchelle unleashed a shot that she was forced to punch over the net; however, on the ensuing corner kick Chelsea Regan headed home the second goal of the game.
BU will continue its road stretch when it travels south for a contest on Friday (Sept. 4) at Loyola at 5 p.m.
