WASHINGTON, D.C. - Unable to overcome a 25 percent shooting performance, the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Hampton, 51-50, in the third round of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off Tuesday evening at George Washington's Charles Smith Center. The Terriers (2-3) had the ball with 4.9 seconds remaining under their own basket, but committed a charge on the final possession after crossing mid-court for the loss.
Senior John Holland tallied a team-high 12 points, while freshman Dom Morris posted a game-high 10 rebounds along with seven points. The Terriers dominated the boards, finishing with a 49-32 advantage and 24 offensive rebounds. However, they only had 14 second chance points, as they shot 16-for-64 (.250) and 4-for-26 (.154) from beyond the arc.
For the third consecutive game, the Pirates (3-1) held an opponent below 51 points to earn the victory in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Darrion Pellum posted a game-high 19 points with 17 coming in the first half, while Charles Funches recorded 12 of his 14 in the second along with a team-high seven rebounds. Hampton went 19-for-48 (.396) and had one less turnover against the Terriers, 18-17.
Using its athleticism, an active Hampton squad pressured BU non-stop and never allowed the Terriers to get into a rhythm. O'Brien gave them their largest lead of the game, 5-0, in the second minute with a 3-pointer. The Pirates responded with a trey, and the lead never went beyond four for either team until the second half.
Shooting 7-for-33 (.212), BU only trailed at the half, 30-29, due to the team's effectiveness of getting to the free throw line. The Terriers made 13 of their 17 attempts, with junior Patrick Hazel taking nine trips to the line. However in the second half, they would only attempt one free throw.
Funches' jumper with the made free throw after the foul gave Hampton its largest lead of the game, 37-31, with 15:12 remaining. Freshman Travis Robinson cut it to one at 13:58 with a 3-pointer, and neither team would score again until 9:28 when Pellum hit his final field goal of the night.
Holland quickly tied the contest with a 3-pointer, but the Terriers hurt themselves with back-to-back turnovers. Kwame Morgan took advantage of the missed opportunities and put Hampton back ahead, 42-39, at 7:45. Holland later tied the game again at 1:58 with a contested jumper next to the basket after grabbing the offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer.
On the next possession, Funches drove to the basket and fed Danny Agbelese for the basket and a two-point lead. Holland missed a 3-pointer, and Funches made both free throws after being fouled while grabbing the rebound for a 51-47 lead with 1:01 remaining.
Scoring the final basket of the game, Holland drove to the hoop and hit the layup while getting fouled. He made his free throw attempt with 46 seconds left to cut the deficit to one. Hazel blocked Kwame Morgan's jumper into Holland's hands, leading to a fast break opportunity. However, while trying to bring the ball up the court under duress, Holland was swiped by Morgan, who was immediately fouled.
Morgan missed the 1-and-1, and BU quickly called the timeout with 4.9 seconds left on the clock. Freshman D.J. Irving tried to use his quickness and go from one end of the court to the other, but while driving inside the 3-point line, a Pirate jumped in front a second beforehand to draw the charge with 0.6 seconds left. The ball was then quickly inbounded and time expired.
The Terriers will next play Nevada (1-3) on Tuesday (Nov. 23) at 5:30 p.m. in the final round of the NIT Season Tip-Off. The Wolf Pack fell to George Washington, 58-56, in the second game of the double header. The contest marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs and BU's second ever against a WAC team.
