BOSTON - Riding a five-game winning streak, the Boston University softball team (17-8, 3-0 AE) will take on America East foe Maine (12-19, 3-0 AE) this weekend in a three-game series at BU Softball Field.
With rain coming into the Boston area, the series has a number of time changes. The two squads will play in a single game on Saturday at 4 p.m. and will follow that up with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
The Terriers are coming off a wild victory over crosstown rival Boston College, 10-9, on Thursday afternoon. Down by as many as seven runs in the fourth frame, the Terriers put on their rally caps and scored nine runs in the final three innings to earn the come-from-behind win. Five Terriers had multiple-hit games led by junior Erica Casacci who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and nearly hit for the cycle as she had a triple in the first and then followed up with a single in the third and a double in the fourth. Redshirt freshman Jayme Mask, the Terriers' lead-off hitter, also had a productive day with two hits and three RBIs. In the fifth inning, Mask helped keep BU's rally going as she unleashed a three-bagger into center field, and using her exceptional speed came home after an error in the outfield.
With their great afternoon's on Thursday both Mask and Casacci improved their batting average's to .343 and .341, respectively. Senior April Setterlund continues to set the bar high with a .377 BA and a team-best 22 RBIs and five home runs.
Setterlund is closing in on a handful of BU records as she needs just seven more home runs and RBIs to surpass Chiya Louie's career marks in both of those categories. Additionally, Setterlund needs to cross home plate just four more times to break Shayne Lotito's career record of 150 runs.
In the pitcher's circle, the Terriers have been boosted by their young staff, which currently leads the America East with a team ERA of 1.87. Sophomore Erin Schuppert boasts a 0.98 ERA, good for second in the AE, with a 6-1 record and 41 strikeouts. Freshman Holli Floetker (6-2) has a 1.53 ERA with a team-high 57 Ks and three shutouts, while sophomore Whitney Tuthill is 5-4 on the mound with a 1.57 ERA and 26 strikeouts.
Following its three-game series with Maine, BU will continue its homestand with UMass on Wednesday (April 6) in a rematch of last year's NCAA regional game.
