BOSTON - Junior Tina Hoppe of the Boston University women's swimming and diving team was recently appointed the President of the America East Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
SAAC is the vehicle for college student-athletes' participation in the governing and administrative process for colleges and conferences within the NCAA.
"I'm honored to have been appointed President of America East SAAC," said Hoppe. "I am excited to work with the conference office as well as representing the 3,500+ student-athletes in the America East this year. I am in love with Boston, the University and the conference, and I cannot wait to get everyone involved and make a significant impact on all the America East schools and their surrounding communities."
Hoppe will take on numerous responsibilities as President, which includes leading the annual America East SAAC meeting and representing SAAC at the annual AEC meeting. The Stroudsburg, Pa. native, will serve as the liaison between SAAC and the conference office and will work closely with league staff to develop agenda items as well as organizing conference SAAC initiatives.
For the past two years Hoppe has been an active member of BU's chapter, where she currently serves as secretary, and was a driving force behind last May's Massachusetts Special Olympics North Section Aquatic State Games Qualifier at Competition Pool. She, along with teammate Kara Zebrowski, was responsible for organizing volunteers and athlete entries, arranging food service for the event, which hosted over 500 Special Olympians and involved over 200 BU student-athletes, coaches and trainers. She also worked closely with corporate sponsor Comcast and the Special Olympics staff.
Hoppe, a student in the School of Hospitality Administration, also assisted in the successful Terrier Takeout and Teddy Bear Toss events, as well as the College for Every Student program.
She hopes to use her tenure as President to further the directive of the America East SAAC Mission Statement to "enhance the total student-athlete experience by fostering a positive student-athlete image via community service."
