FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior Travis Robinson recorded a career-high 17 points and classmate Dom Morris posted his third career double-double, as the Boston University men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 48-45 decision at George Mason on Saturday afternoon.
With the score tied at 45-45, the Patriots (4-2) managed to hit a contested layup with 0.2 seconds remaining and added a made free throw after the foul. Suffering their second buzzer-beating play of the season following a one-point defeat at Northeastern, the Terriers drop to 0-5.
Tallying a game-high three steals on the defensive end, Robinson shot 5-of-7, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, to lead all players in scoring. Hauling in a game-high 10 boards, Morris was the other Terrier in double figures with 11 points.
Johnny Williams was one of two Patriots near a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. Sherrod Wright added nine points and nine boards, as the Patriots held a 41-36 edge in rebounds.
In a contest that featured 12 lead changes and nine ties, neither team could get into an offensive groove with BU shooting 15-of-53 (.283) and GMU finishing 20-of-55 (.364) from the field. Robinson's made free throw put the game at 8-8 with just 9:38 left in the first half, as both teams pressed each other throughout the game.
Robinson nailed his third 3-pointer to give BU its largest lead of the half, 19-15, at 5:06, but the Patriots came right back with jumpers by Jonathan Arledge and Bryon Allen. Neither team scored in the final 2:11, as the squads entered the locker room with the score, 21-21.
To open the second half, they battled back and forth with Williams' jumper pushing GMU ahead, 37-34, with 9:37 remaining in regulation. BU though went on an 11-2 run with four Terriers contributing points during the six-minute stretch to grab its largest lead of the game, 45-39, at 3:32.
Freshman John Papale hit a 3-pointer from the corner at 5:59 and junior D.J. Irving fed Morris from the top of the key for an easy layup to cap the run. The field goal would be the final one for the Terriers, as the Patriots tallied the final nine points of the game.
Following Morris' score, BU forced Wright into a missed 3-point attempt, but GMU was able to grab the loose ball and get it under the basket to Marko Gujanicic for the layup. Allen later cut the Terriers' lead to two at 2:16 off a jumper.
With 45 seconds remaining, Papale's 3-pointer rimmed in and out, and GMU grabbed the rebound while getting fouled. Facing a 1-and-1, Gujanicic hit both free throws to tie the game for the final time.
On their final possession, the Terriers were called out of bounds while grabbing a deflected pass, giving the Patriots the ball with 14.1 seconds left. Allen brought it up the court and drove toward the basket in the final moments, creating contact while hitting the layup.
Both teams finished with 12 assists, 16 turnovers and 16 points in the paint with the Terriers having a 9-2 advantage in fast break points. The Patriots’ bench edged the BU’s bench, 18-10.
The Terriers will next return home on Wednesday, Nov. 28, to host Coastal Carolina with action set to begin at 7 p.m. in Case Gym.
