
Terriers Remain in First After Day Three of AE Championship

BOSTON - The Boston University men's and women's swimming and diving teams remain in first place after day three of the 2012 America East Swimming & Diving Championship being held at BU's Competition Pool. The BU women lead the field with 476 points while the men rank first with 628 points.
In the first final of the night, the 400 IM, senior Amanda Schmitz placed second with a time of 4:16.40 to set a new school record while junior Katie Radin took fourth in 4:20.94.
In the next event, the 100 butterfly, junior Lauren Drake was the top finisher for the Terriers with a time of 56.35 for fourth place while teammate Katie Kenney was behind her for fifth place in 56.35.
Sophomore Kendra Cheng paced BU in the 200 freestyle, claiming fourth in 1:50.48, while senior Kristen Connors earned fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.56). Junior Kara Zebrowski (56.57) and rookie Alexsa Savage (57.09) placed second and fourth, respectively, in the 100 backstroke.
In the final women's event of the night, the 400 medley relay, Zebrowski, Connors, Schmitz and Cheng set a new school record with a time of 3:46.70 in their third-place finish.
On the men's side, sophomore Nik Astashinsky won the 400 IM, clocking in at 3:56.57. Freshman Bryan Bonack touched the wall third for BU in 3:57.87 and sophomore Knox Anderson took fifth in 4:02.01. Senior Daniel Kempf then captured the 100 butterfly for the Terriers with a time of 48.59. Rookies Ryan Bach (49.49) and Andy Vazquez (49.75) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Rookie Connor Stuewe earned second place in the 200 freestyle (1:40.62). Classmate Cole Puchi posted a fourth-place finish in 1:40.69 and fellow freshman Rodrigo Gonzalez was right behind him for fifth (1:40.94).
Sophomore Jeff Thomas captured the 100 breaststroke in 56.12 and classmate Andrew Guinther took third in 56.29 Stuewe then returned to the pool for another second-place finish, setting a new school record in the 100 backstroke in 49.40. Sophomore Jared Scheck also picked up a second-place finish on the night in the 3-meter diving event with a total of 297.85 points.
In the final event of the night, the quartet of Stuewe, Thomas, Bach and Kempf claimed the 400 medley relay in 3:15.80.
The Terriers return to the pool tomorrow for the final day of the 2012 America East Championship. Preliminary action begins at 10 a.m. and the finals will commence at 6 p.m.
