
Softball Heads to Knoxville for University of Tennessee Tournament

The Boston University softball team (3-2) travels to Knoxville, Tenn., for the University of Tennessee Tournament from Friday, March 2, to Sunday March 4. Originally scheduled to play five games over three days, the Terriers will now play three games over the course of three days due to predicted inclement weather issues in Knoxville.
BU opens the tournament at 10 a.m. on Friday against East Tennessee State. On Saturday, the Terriers face Murray State at 12:30 p.m. and then close out the tournament against Memphis at 10 a.m. on Sunday. BU’s games against Middle Tennessee State and Louisville have been cancelled.
The Terriers arrive in Tennessee with a 3-2 record after participating in the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla., last weekend. BU finished fifth in the field of 13 teams after the Terriers defeated South Florida, a team receiving votes in the polls, 5-3. BU also earned victories over Big 10 member Illinois, 8-1, and Winthrop, 3-0. BU faced its first ranked opponent of the season, No. 17/18 Louisiana-Lafayette, and suffered a 5-1 setback.
Sophomore Holli Floetker earned Pitcher of the Week honors from the America East after going 3-1 on the mound for the Terriers. The reigning Pitcher of the Year pitched 24 innings, allowing eight runs and recording a 3.00 ERA. She struck out 13 batters and held the opposition to a .261 batting average.
Classmate Megan Volpano led BU at the plate, with a .400 batting average and six RBIs. Fellow sophomore Chelsea O’Connor also drove in six runs for the Terriers. ETSU enters the tournament with a 3-10 record after picking up a pair of wins over Niagara (1-0) and UT Martin (5-1) last weekend at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. Sam Lower leads the Bucs with a .394 batting average and has driven in a team-best 10 runs. Katie Wolff leads ETSU on the mound with a 2-2 record and 2.01 ERA.
The Racers of Murray State begin the weekend with a 4-2 record and most recently went 2-1 at the Holiday Inn University Plaza Hilltopper Spring Classic last weekend, with wins over Indiana State (11-3) and Moorehead State (7-6). Megan Glosser is the Racers’ top threat at bat with a .619 average and 11 hits on the year while Leslie Bridges has driven in a team-best seven runs. Murray State boasts two pitchers with ERA’s under 2.00, in CheyAnne Gaskey (1.62) and Chelsey Sullivan (1.65).
Memphis arrives in Knoxville with a 4-12 overall record and split in its last two outings at the Blues City Classic, losing to Missouri State (1-0) and defeating Southeast Missouri State (1-0). Morgan Crosby leads the Tigers with a .365 batting average and 19 hits while Jessica Phillips has a team-high 11 RBIs. Ellen Roberts has done 2-4 for Memphis on the mound with a 4.13 ERA.
