BOSTON - Looking to return to its winning ways, the Boston University softball team hosts Stony Brook for a three-game series at the BU Softball field this weekend. The Terriers and the Seawolves will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31, beginning at 1 p.m. then return to the field on Sunday, April 1, for a single game at 12 p.m.
BU (19-9, 3-0 America East) has won eight of its last nine game, with a 3-0 loss at Connecticut on Wednesday snapping the Terriers’ eight game winning streak. It was just the third time in 28 games this season that BU was held without a run.
Ranked No. 23 in the Mid-Major Poll, the Terriers offense has been led by a pair of sophomores in Jayme Mask and Megan Volpano, with 30 hits each. Mask also leads the squad with a .361 batting average. Classmate Chelsea O’Connor is just behind with 29 hits and has scored a team-high 20 runs while fellow sophomore Amy Ekart leads the team with 19 RBIs and five home runs.
The pitching staff for BU has been solid all season, with the trio boasting a 2.48 ERA. Sophomore Holli Floetker has a record of 12-2 on the mound, including three shutouts. Floetker has struck out 78 batters in 96 innings of work. Junior Whitney Tuthill has an even record of 4-4 on the mound in 62.1 innings of work and classmate Erin Schuppert owns a 3-3 record in 38 innings of work.
Stony Brook arrives in Boston with an 18-7 overall record and a 3-0 mark in conference play. The Seawolves split a pair of games against Iona in midweek non-conference action. Freshman Shayla Giosia leads the team with a .364 batting average and has driven in a team-high 21 runs while senior Suzanne Karath has leads Stony Brook with 29 hits. Rookie Allison Cukrov is the leader on the mound, boasting a 9-4 record and 1.36 ERA.
As a team, the Seawolves lead the conference with a .300 batting average and have scored a league-best 118 runs.
Following the series with Stony Brook, the Terriers will take a break from conference action and host Bryant at the BU Softball Field on Wednesday, April 4, at 4 p.m. The Terriers defeated the Bulldogs in a meeting earlier this year, as BU posted a school record 19 hits in a 13-3 victory on March 21.
