BOSTON – The Boston University women’s swimming and diving team opened the 2013 portion of its schedule with a 179-121 victory over America East rival New Hampshire Monday afternoon at the Competition Pool. The Terriers claimed first-place finishes in 10 of the competition’s 16 events.
BU started the meet with a strong showing in the 200 medley relay, as the Terriers claimed the top two spots in the race. The team of Katie Radin, Tess Harpur, Celia Simpson and Karla Ferrara took first with a time of 1:48.06 while the quartet of Kendra Cheng, Elizabeth Garreau, Katie Kenney and Courtney Grace finished second in 1:48.17.
The Terriers claimed three of the top four spots in the next race, the 1,000 freestyle, with Stephanie Nasson taking first in 10:13.40. Megan Happ finished in third with a time of 10:22.80 while Anna Veselovsky took fourth in 10:38.28. BU continued to roll in the 200 freestyle, with Mika Spencer winning in 1:51.74 and Cheng taking second in 1:51.84.
Radin claimed her first individual victory of the afternoon with a time of 56.85 to win the 100 backstroke while Kara Zebrowski finished third in 58.53. The Terriers took second and third in the next event, the 100 breaststroke, with Harpur taking second (1:07.00) and Garreau finishing third (1:08.10).
Kenney was BU’s top finisher in 200 butterfly, as she placed third (2:04.94) while Simpson took fourth (2:05.67). Ferrara then paced BU in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.37, which was good for second place. Courtney Grace took fourth in 24.70.
Cheng earned her first individual victory in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.50 while Spencer (52.83) and Grace (54.08) finished third and fourth, respectively. Radin then claimed her second victory of the meet in the 200 backstroke, as she finished first in 2:05.11 while Alexsa Savage took third in 2:06.52.
Ferrara had the top finish for BU in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.06 for second place while Nasson earned her second victory in the distance events with a time of 5:03.30 in the 500 freestyle.
The Terriers took the second spot in the next two races, the 100 butterfly and the 400 IM. Kenney finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 57.23, while BU finished 2-4 in the 400 IM, led by Spencer (4:29.94), Cheng (4:31.40) and Radin (4:32.95).
In the final race, the 200 freestyle relay, the foursome of Grace, Savage, Spencer and Kenney placed first with a time of 1:37.96.
In the diving events, the Terriers claimed the top two spots from both boards, as Melinda Matyas and Chelsea Glincman finished 1-2 in each event. Matyas scored a 264.30 from the 1-meter board while Glincman scored 243.45. On the 3-meter board, Matyas won with 271.87 points while Glincman was just behind her with 251.17 points.
Next up for the Terriers is the Dartmouth Invitational in Hanover, N.H. The competition starts on Friday, Jan. 25, and concludes on Saturday, Jan. 26.
