BOSTON - Sophomore Lucas McBride scored in the 75th minute and redshirt-freshman Matt Gilbert had one save to lead the Boston University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Lehigh on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
With the program's first-ever Patriot League win, the Terriers improve to 4-7-1 and 1-3 in league play, while the Mountain Hawks drop to 1-8-1 (0-4 PL).
BU maintained possession for most of the game and entered the half with a 9-5 lead in shot attempts. The Terriers finally converted at 74:46 when McBride collected a long goal kick from Gilbert that was deflected by multiple defenders and fired past Lehigh's Jacob Gottwald for the game winner. McBride now has a team-high three goals, while Gilbert has two assists on the season from the keeper position.
The Terriers' backline had a strong performance, limiting Lehigh's chances of scoring despite giving up eight corners. The Hawks had an 8-6 edge against BU but only finished with seven total shots. In the second half alone, Lehigh had just two shots along with five corners.
Gilbert made a great diving save to his right at 7:19 off a hard blast from Lehigh's Danny Gonzalez, who was looking to score during a counter attack at the far post. The Hawks had a corner kick immediately following, but Gilbert was able to get in position for the catch.
The Terriers came back putting pressure on Lehigh for the next 10 minutes but almost fell behind on a turnover in the 20th minute. Danny Gonzalez picked off a BU pass near midfield and had a 1-on-1 situation with Gilbert, who quickly ran toward the ball to force a shot just wide of the right post.
Junior Parker Powell nearly put BU on the board at 43:41, but his one timer off a free kick was saved by Gottwald. The Hawks then blocked a shot from senior Evin Nadaner following a BU corner.
Lehigh opened the second half with three corner kicks, but the Terriers were able to easily clear all of them. BU earned one of its own at 49:53 after a failed Lehigh clear, junior Jordan Barker sent the ball into the box for a McBride header that was just wide of the left post.
Following McBride's goal, Lehigh had a corner at 83:45 that Brian Vail was able to get a head on, but the ball flew wide harmlessly. BU finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots with both McBride and freshman David Asbjornsson earning five apiece.
Improving to 2-0 all-time against the Hawks after their first meeting since 2001, the Terriers will have a week off before traveling to Lafayette on Saturday, Oct. 19 for a 2 p.m. start.
