BOSTON - Coming off a key 2-0 victory over Loyola Maryland, the Boston University men's soccer will now embark on its final road trip of the regular season, starting with a trip to Colgate on Wednesday night with action slated to begin at 7 p.m.
Three Patriot League games remain, and the Terriers (5-8-1, 2-4-0 PL) need points to clinch one of the six available berths in the upcoming conference tournament. BU currently sits in eighth place but remains in striking distance with No. 4 American (2-3-2 PL) only two points ahead.
The Raiders (3-11-2, 2-3-1 PL) enter the game also needing points, as they are in a three-way tie for fifth with Bucknell and Lafayette at seven points. Besides facing Colgate, the Terriers still have match-ups remaining against both American and Bucknell. They dropped an earlier meeting at Lafayette, giving the Leopards the edge in a potential tie-breaking scenario.
BU is 3-0-2 all-time against Colgate in a series dating back to 1979. The Terriers earned a 4-2 victory in 2008 after a 4-1 home win in 1986. They last visited the Raiders in 1985, pulling out a 2-0 shutout victory.
Coincidentally, the Terriers posted the same score this past Saturday against Loyola in a much-needed victory. Junior Dominique Badji scored his third goal of the season in the 15th minute off senior Anthony Ciccone's team-high fifth assist. Late in the second half, sophomore Lucas McBride found the back of the net for the fourth time this year with senior Evin Nadaner and junior Jordan Barker assisting on the goal.
Redshirt-freshman Matt Gilbert made three saves for his fifth shutout of the year with four occurring at Nickerson Field. His lone road shutout happened at Harvard in a 0-0 draw. With a 0.99 goals against average and .815 save percentage, Gilbert was helped by a backline that featured the return of former America East Defender of the Year Kelvin Madzongwe. Sophomore Jeroen Blugh was also on the pitch to help limit the Greyhounds to just six total shot attempts.
They face a Colgate squad that is only averaging 0.69 goals per game but has tallied four of its 11 goals in the last three games, highlighted by a 2-1 victory over Bucknell. Ethan Kutler and Zach Pagani both have a team-high five points with two goals and assist, while Geinda Smith, Evan Heroux and Tyler Forbes also have two goals apiece. Barrett Metzger leads the Raiders with two assists.
Defensively, Colgate has featured three goal keepers. Ricky Brown (3-8-1) has appeared in 12 contests and has a 1.36 GAA and .719 save percentage. Liam Stapleton is 0-3-1 this season with a 1.87 GAA and .710 save percentage. They helped the Raiders shut out Cornell and Lafayette.
Following the contest, the Terriers will remain on the road and visit American on Saturday at 1 p.m.
