WEST POINT, N.Y. - Despite both sophomores Lucas McBride and Jeroen Blugh recording their second goals of the season, the Boston University men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 double overtime decision at Army on Saturday night.
The Terriers (3-6-1, 0-2 PL) became just the second opponent in nine games to score on the Black Knights this season, but Army rallied with three straight goals in the final 20 minutes of action to improve to 7-1-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
BU took a quick 1-0 lead in the second minute when McBride intercepted an errant pass in the box and blasted the ball past keeper Winston Boldt into the middle of the net. Bolt recorded five saves, while the Terriers' redshirt-freshman Matt Gilbert tallied six to maintain the score at 1-0 entering the locker room.
At 71:10 for the second time this season, the defender Blugh headed in a goal, this time coming off a free kick from junior Jordan Barker. Blugh came back with another shot three minutes later, but Boldt was in perfect position for the save.
The Black Knights began mounting their rally in the 83rd minute. Gilbert stopped a hard shot from Cody Guerry, but Christian Ollen collected the rebound and scored quickly to cut the deficit in half. Five minutes later, Guerry set up Jordan Lee's goal to send the game to overtime.
In the first extra session, both teams had two shots apiece, but all of them went either high or wide. Finishing with at least two goals for the sixth time this season and tallying its second golden goal, Army won the game at 102:08 off Alex Jaroscak's foot. He beat Gilbert with a blast to the upper left corner following a pass from Nick Williams.
Army finished the game with a 20-18 advantage in shots, while the Terriers had a 11-6 lead in corner kicks. Gilbert posted nine saves against Boldt's seven. Junior Dominique Badji led BU with seven shots with McBride owning a team-high three shots on goal.
The contest marked the first time since a 3-2 overtime defeat to UMass in 2008 that BU lost while scoring at least two goals in a game.
Returning from a four-game road trip, the Terriers will look to rebound on Wednesday (Oct. 9) at Nickerson Field against Holy Cross with action slated to begin at 7 p.m. The game will mark the first home Patriot League game of the year.
