BOSTON - Competing in its first match of the new year, the Boston University men's tennis team dropped a tightly-contested 4-1 decision to Fairfield on Sunday afternoon at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
The Stags (3-0) entered the match-up having won the last three meetings against the Terriers (0-3) by identical scores of 4-3. Trying to get on the winning end, BU was unable to capture the needed tiebreakers.
After earning a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles, Fairfield claimed the doubles point by capturing the No. 2 tiebreaker, 7-3, for the 6-5 win against senior Jesse Frieder and freshman Jake De Vries. The No. 1 match was left unfinished at 5-5.
In singles, freshman Mario Sandoval put the Terriers on the board with a dominating 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 slot. The Stags though won two second-set tiebreakers to pull away.
They topped senior Chanon Varapongsittikul, 6-4, 6-5(2), in the No. 1 position and defeated junior Emilio Teran, 6-3, 6-5(5) at No. 5.
Frieder tried to mount a rally at No. 2, but Fairfield held on for the 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win.
In the two incomplete contests, sophomore Stefan Lemire was tied up at No. 5 ((6-5(3), 5-6(2), 5-5)), and freshman Jay Leelavanich was ahead, 3-0, in the first set.
The Terriers will next visit Sacred Heart on Saturday (Feb. 1) at 6 p.m.
