BOSTON - Freshman Bjarki Benediktsson recorded two assists and senior Nick Thomson earned two saves to help lead the Boston University men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Army on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Extending their unbeaten streak to five games with both goals coming in the first 15 minutes of action, the Terriers improve to 6-2-1 (2-0-0 PL), while the Black Knights fall to 3-4-3 (0-2-0 PL).
Senior striker Dominique Badji continued his stellar play in the 12th minute by scoring his fifth goal in the last four games. Benediktsson sent a pass from midfield toward the top of the box for sophomore Felix De Bona to flick over to Badji, who moved past a pair of defenders and fired toward the left post.
Named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year in 2013, All-American Winston Boldt was defenseless in the 15th minute against a header from sophomore David Asbjornsson, who collected his second goal of the year off a free kick from Benediktsson near the right corner.
In a physical contest featuring a combined 30 fouls, the Terriers dominated possession during the first half and entered the locker room with a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard and 8-1 advantage in shots attempted.
Visiting BU for the first time since 1986, the Black Knights came out attacking with Christian Clark going wide at 45:32. Three minutes later following a BU penalty, Mario Da Silva curled a free kick toward the far post from 30 yards out, but Thomson was able to poke it away.
The Terriers went down a man in the 75th minute when freshman Eric Udelson received his second yellow card of the game. Army could not take advantage, only attempting three shots in the final 15 minutes of regulation against the backline anchored by senior defender Kelvin Madzongwe.
During the 82nd minute, Cody Guerry came off the bench and moved around a defender after collecting a throw-in near the right side of the box. He did not have enough on the kick though, and his rushed soft shot went into the hands of Thomson, who earned his fourth shutout of the season.
Both Badji and Army's Kim finished with a game-high three shots, as Army ended the contest ahead, 10-9, in attempts. BU had a slight advantage in corners, 5-4, and avenged last season's 3-2 overtime defeat at West Point.
Having concluded a three-game homestand, the Terriers will play five of the next six games on the road, starting with a trip to Holy Cross on Wednesday (Oct. 8) at 7 p.m.
