CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -
Erica Kosienski's goal in the 105th minute gave the Boston University women's soccer team (7-3-3, 2-0-2 PL) a 2-1 victory over Harvard (6-3-2, 1-0-1 Ivy) and extended its unbeaten streak to five games on Wednesday night at Soldiers Field Soccer Sadium. This was the Terrier's first overtime victory this season and also extends their series unbeaten streak to eight games against Harvard.
BU put together one of its best offensive performances of the season against the Crimson, totaling a season-high 22 shots, 13 of which were on goal. Alyssa Parisi was also steadfast in net, making a career-high eight saves.
Despite being defensively-minded squads, both teams started aggressively on offense, exchanging tries on net early and often throughout the first half. In total, BU took 11 shots while Harvard managed five over the first 45 minutes.
BU had four excellent looks on net throughout the first half but the Crimson goalkeeper made three incredible saves to keep the Terriers at bay.
In the 18th minute, Taylor Krebs took a shot from just inside the 18-yard box that looked like it would tuck in the upper right corner of the net but managed to clip the crossbar and post and bounce out.
Krebs got another try seven minutes later when she beat three Harvard defenders to get a clear look on the net but the Crimson goalkeeper made an incredible diving save to maintain the 0-0 tie.
Harvard's goalie made two diving stops to prevent Christina Wakefield and Erica Kosienski from scoring late in the first half and the Crimson used the excellent net minding as momentum on the opposite end and scored the first goal of the game in the 43rd minute. The Crimson took a flurry of shots, the last of which Parisi couldn't get to in time and Harvard took a 1-0 lead as the first half was closing.
The Terriers had an answer early in the second stanza, however, when Jenna Fisher and Lauren MacLellan teamed up for a textbook goal. MacLellan fed the ball from the right corner and Fisher one-touched it to the left post to tie the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute.
BU continued to pressure on offense throughout the remainder of the half but Harvard followed suit and totaled five shots on goal to close out regulation.
Krebs came out fast in the first overtime period and put two shots on net in the first two minutes. The Terrier defense showed its strength by allowing just one shot throughout the 10 minutes, a header of off a corner that went wide.
Boston University would only need a few more minutes, however, and scored midway through the final period of overtime when Kosienski got the ball off her foot quickly while turning and got it to slip past the Harvard goalkeeper's hands and find the back of the net to end the game in a Terrier victory.
BU stays home for a Patriot League affair with Lafayette on Saturday at 2 p.m. on Nickerson Field.
