Both squads advanced to the postseason last spring with BU advancing to the NIT as the Patriot League regular season champion with the Spartans earning a bid in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. In total, the Terriers and NSU have made three postseason trips apiece over the last four years.
BU has just 31 of the 82 points returning from the first-ever contest between the two teams. Junior John Papale tallied a team-high 18 points in the contest and was a key fixture in Sunday's hard-fought 71-65 loss to Northeastern. He dished out a career-high six assists and added 11 points and five rebounds, as the Terriers featured at least three players earning their first career collegiate start in a season opener for the first time since 2006-07.
Averaging 6.0 ppg last year, sophomore Cedric Hankerson was limited to 3-of-13 shooting but hit seven free throws to finish with a team-high 15 points. He also recorded a career-high six assists with five rebounds. Freshman Cheddi Mosely was a perfect 4-o-4, highlighted by three treys, while adding three steals and two assists. Junior Justin Alston contributed six points in limited action due to foul trouble.
Three other Terriers made their debuts with sophomore transfers Eric Fanning and Blaise Mbargorba combining for 14 points. Freshman Eric Johnson came off the bench with two points and a rebound in 11 minutes of action. The team's top-returning rebounder Nathan Dieudonne again led BU on the defensive end with nine rebounds and two steals.
BU led 36-27 at the half by shooting 48.1 percent and holding the Huskies to 34.5 percent. Northeastern though had the hot hand in the second half with six 3-pointers on 11 attempts. The Huskies shot 56.0 percent in the final 20 minutes and limited the Terriers to just 32.0 percent to rally fo the win.
Selected to finish fourth in the MEAC this season, NSU opened the year with an 81-43 victory over Division II member Pfeiffer University and 67-39 loss at Virginia. The Spartans lost all four double-figure scorers from last season's win over BU to graduation, but does feature a familiar face to Terrier fans.
Malik Thomas averaged 6.0 ppg and 4.4 rpg in 90 games for the Terriers before graduating from BU this past May. With one year of eligibility remaining due to redshirting the 2010-11 season, he's currently third on the team in scoring at 8.5 ppg while also averaging 4.0 rpg. Fordham transfer guard Jeff Short is eligible to play this year and leads the Spartans at 15.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg.
Following the game, the Terriers will remain on the road and visit current-No. 1 Kentucky on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats will be coming off a dominating 72-40 victory over No. 5 Kansas.
The contest will mark BU's fist visit to Rupp Arena since 2010 and its first contest against the nation's top-ranked team since playing Duke in the 2005 season opener as part of the preseason NIT.
