November 25, 2014 | Men's Soccer
BOSTON - Owner of a 3.87 GPA and nine shutouts this season, Boston University men's soccer keeper and reigning Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year Nick Thomson has been named a Capital One Academic All-American, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Tuesday afternoon. With the announcement, Thomson becomes the first Terrier since Ben Havey ('10) and 10th overall under head coach Neil Roberts to receive the distinction.
Though the Cramlington, England native was named to the third team, he has the honor of just being one of three goalkeepers in the country to receive Academic All-America NCAA Division I Men's Soccer accolades.
Thomson played every minute in goal this season for the Terriers, who went 12-4-4 and 6-0-3 in league play to claim their first regular season title since 2011 despite being selected sixth in the preseason poll. BU also reached its first conference tournament final since 2008.
A three-year starter at BU with his junior season marred by injury, he has recorded 28 wins, 20 shutouts and more than 200 saves in his tenure. He currently ranks 24th nationally this season with an 0.814 save percentage as well as 23rd in goals against average (.754).
In addition to his on-field contributions, Thomson excels in the classroom with a 3.87 grade point average as a Health Science major. He also is involved on campus as a member of SAAC and has volunteered with several entities, including the Special Olympics.
