COLUMBIA, S.C. - Thanks to a Rachel Blauner goal just 11 minutes into the proceedings, the No. 22 Boston University women's soccer team defeated the College of Charleston, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at South Carolina's Stone Stadium.
BU (3-1) needed just the lone goal thanks to a strong defensive effort. The College of Charleston (2-2) managed just one shot one target as sophomore Bridget Conway kept a clean sheet in her first collegiate start. She came up with the one save she needed to make in the second half as her 82nd-minute stop kept the Terriers' advantage.
Three Terriers made the All-Tournament Team as part of the Garnet and Black Classic. In addition to Blauner, junior McKenzie Hollenbaugh and senior Kai Miller made the squad. Both Hollenbaugh and Miller were part of a Terrier defense that allowed just one goal over two games. BU finished second in the tournament ahead of Milwaukee and College of Charleston. South Carolina finished first with a pair of wins.
Blauner's strike came in the 11th minute thanks to a super through ball from senior Jamie Turchi. Turchi slid a pass to the top of the six-yard box and Blauner collected it and fired it home for her first goal of the year. The goal came in the run of play as the Terriers had already earned two of their five total corners through the first 10 minutes of the contest.
Sophomore Alexandra Cooper nearly made it 2-0 in the 25th minute, but her shot hit the post. BU finished the opening 45 minutes with five shots before sending eight more shots towards goal in the second half, two of which found the target.
The Cougars earned three corners in the second half as they fought for an equalizer, but the Terrier defense held its shape nicely and combined with Conway for the team's first shutout of the season. BU will remain on the road for its next game, as the Terriers trek to Providence to take on the Friars. Opening kick is set for 7 p.m.
