The Boston University women's soccer team battled back to tie Army on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field. The Terriers (5-3-2, 1-0-1 PL) overcame an early one-goal deficit with a strong second-half and overtime performance against the Black Knights (4-5-1, 1-0-1 PL) to remain unbeaten in Patriot League play.
Army scored early, notching the first goal of the game in the 19th minute on the first shot of the game. Sam Gottleib struck from the top of the 18-yard box, sending it far side past Alyssa Parisi and into the back corner of the goal.
Neither team would attempt another shot for the remainder of the first period and the Black Knights started the second half with a 1-0 advantage.
BU came out of halftime with a sense of urgency, and got two shots on goal within the first 10 minutes of the half. Ana Cuffia attempted a shot off a corner before McKenzie Hollenbaugh took a try at the net.
The Terriers got on the board in the 65th minute when Jenna Fisher tipped in a pass from the far left side by Taylor Krebs to even the score at 1-1.
Five minutes later Jamie Turchi nearly netted the go-ahead goal off a free kick, which she booted from about 30 yards out and just missed the top left corner of the goal. The Terriers didn't allow any Army shots for the final 40 minutes of regulation to send the match into overtime periods.
Boston University continued to dominate throughout the next ten minutes, and got one good look at the goal when Clare Pleuler sent a hard shot from 10 yards out that the goalkeeper had to leap out and stop on an otherwise wide open net. Krebs began the play with a breakaway run down the left side and sent a clean pass in that ended up on Pleuler's foot for the try on net.
The Terriers continued to prevent production from the Black Knight offense in the final overtime period, disallowing a single shot to maintain the stalemate. In total, BU prevented Army from attempting a shot for 60 minutes and 43 seconds.
Alivya Wimmer gave a last-stich effort in the closing seconds, taking a shot from just inside the midfield line that went just high of the crossbar and BU settled for a tie.
Bridget Conway, who replaced Parisi at the start of the second half, was responsible for the tie and improves to a 2-1-1 record on the season.
The Terriers are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Worcester, Mass. for a 7 p.m. match at Holy Cross.
