BOSTON - The Terriers maintained their composure and netted two goals in the second half to take a comeback victory over the Loyola Maryland men's soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
The win maintained BU's unbeaten status in the Patriot League (8-2-1, 3-0-1 PL), while the Greyhounds (1-8-2, 0-3-1 PL) are still on the hunt for their first conference victory.
Freshman Nicki Wieners netted the game-winner, his first career goal, off the feed from classmate Magnus Benediktsson at 73:41. Senior and reigning PL Defender of the Week Richie Robinson got the comeback started with an 18-yard strike in the 60th minute.
Both teams got off to a slow start with each totaling just five shots apiece throughout the first half. BU was able to stay in their attacking third for much of the period but only found just one try on net despite several chances.
Loyola found its footing midway through the first half and tested junior and reigning NSCAA College Player of the Week Matt Gilbert twice, but he was there to make the stops and keep the game scoreless at the midway point.
The Greyhounds came out of the gates fast in the second half and wasted no time netting the first goal of the contest, scoring off of a set piece. Laurin Vogel served the ball from 30-yards out into the box, where Mickey Watson got his head and then a foot on it to give Loyola a 1-0 advantage in the 49th minute.
The Terriers composed themselves, however, and made use of their opportunities in their offensive zone. Robinson was able to come up with the answer after BU made two attempts at the net, receiving a pass from freshman Adam Wright at the top of the box and sending it to the keeper's far-side to tie the game at 1-1.
BU kept the pressure on, totaling four shots over the next 10 minutes before finally sending in the game-winner in the 74th minute. Benediktsson fed the ball up to Wieners, who got around a defender thanks to junior Felix De Bona setting a screen and needed only to slide it past the keeper to give the Terriers their first advantage of the afternoon.
Both teams continued to pressure for the remainder of the match but couldn't find any more goals, and the Terriers came away with the 2-1 victory.
BU outshot Loyola, 17-15, but Loyola had better aim, edging the Terriers, 7-6, in on-goal attempts. The Terriers also finished ahead in corners, 6-3.
Gilbert totaled six saves in the win, while Loyola's Matt Sanchez made four stops. Coming off Wednesday's golden goal at Colgate, sophomore Anthony Viteri was problematic for the Greyhounds with a team-high six shots.
BU is back in action on Tuesday (Oct. 13) when the Terriers travel to Brown for a non-conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
