CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - After helping lead the Boston University men's soccer team to a pair of one-goal victories, freshman Magnus Benediktsson and junior Matt Gilbert have earned Patriot League weekly honors, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
With his first Corvias Patriot League Rookie of the Week award, Benediktsson becomes the eighth different Terrier to be recognized by the conference this year. The Icelandic native played a critical role in the two wins, as he assisted on both game-winning goals. At Colgate, he one-timed the ball in overtime to the top of the box for sophomore Anthony Viteri to knock in for the 1-0 victory. This past Saturday in the 74th minute, he set up fellow classmate Nicki Wieners to complete the 2-1 come-from-behind win.
Gilbert repeated as the Corvias PL Goalkeeper of the Week after tallying a combined 14 saves. He first tied his season high with eight saves at Colgate for his fifth shutout of the season and then added another six in a 2-1 victory over Loyola. Previously recognized as the NSCAA College Player of the Week, he ranks eighth nationally in save percentage at 0.862 and 12th in saves per game at 5.09.
The Terriers are riding a 13-game unbeaten streak in regular-season PL action, their best stretch within a conference since going 28-0-1 from 1989-1993. They will next resume non-conference play at Brown on Tuesday (Oct. 13) at 7 p.m.
