BOSTON - Sophomore Cheddi Mosely scored a team-high 19 points and was one of five Terriers in double figures, but the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Northeastern in overtime, 87-84, on Friday night in the Terriers' season opener at Case Gym.
Playing in the third straight overtime game between the two teams at The Roof, the Terriers (0-1) were outscored by the Huskies (1-0), 10-7, in overtime. After Caleb Donnelly drained a 3-pointer from the corner with 16 seconds remaining, senior John Papale had a look to tie the game at the buzzer while being pressured. However, his attempt fell short and Northeastern, the reigning CAA champion, escaped with the victory behind David Walker's game-high 27 points.
Papale finished with 12 points thanks to four three-pointers and moved into a tie-for-fourth all-time at BU in made treys at 196 total. His two classmates also had strong games, including Nathan Dieudonne, who finished with 10 points and 10 boards for his eighth career double-double. Senior Justin Alston was 6-of-9 from the field and finished with 15 points.
Freshman Kyle Foreman impressed the raucous crowd in his collegiate debut, scoring 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting while also leading the Terriers with seven assists. Sophomore Nick Havener was 4-of-7 from the field and finished with nine points.
Both teams finished even in points in the paint (28) and points off turnovers (15). The Huskies held a 40-37 lead at halftime and led by as many as eight in the second half before the Terriers mounted their comeback.
Trailing 56-49 with 13:19 remaining in regulation, BU reeled off 11 straight points with Mosely hitting a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws. Sophomore Will Goff hit a trey for the 60-56 advantage at 9:51.
The Terriers briefly extended the lead to five (66-61) on Alston's layup at 6:52, but it was short lived, as the Huskies used nine made free throws down the stretch to keep pace. Quincy Ford gave NU its final lead (77-76) in regulation at 1:29 on a pair of free throws. Goff was fouled on the ensuing possession and hit the second attempt to put the score at 77-77.
The Huskies blocked Mosely's 3-point attempt with 32 seconds left and called timeout to design a play. BU's defense held strong and prevented NU from scoring to force overtime.
Havener scored the first bucket of the extra session, but Walker responded with seven consecutive points off two layups and a 3-pointer. Down 84-79 with two minutes left, Dieudonne grabbed an offensive rebound and drained both free throws after being fouled. The Terriers then forced a turnover, and Papale tied the game with his final trey at 39 seconds.
Coming out of a timeout with just a few seconds left on the shot clock, NU managed to find Donnelly for the Huskies' 11th and final 3-pointer of the game for the victory. Becoming one of the best rivlaries in college hoops, seven of the last eight meetings have had the winner either emerge on the final play of regulation or in overtime. The other game was decided by just six points.
Posting a season-high 19 assists twice last season, the Terriers finished with 21 assists against just nine turnovers and will look to build off the solid offensive performance against three-time defending America East champion Albany on Monday night at Case Gym with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
