BOSTON - Seeking its fourth win of the season against the America East conference, the Boston University men's basketball team will host regional foe New Hampshire on Monday at 7 p.m.
Selected to finish third in the Patriot League, the Terriers (5-6) have already collected wins over three-time defending AE champion Albany (69-64), UMass Lowell (80-60) and Binghamton (75-65). They will look to bounce back after having their two-game win streak snapped at Canisius (84-68) on Saturday afternoon.
Coming off a 19-13 season and appearance in the CIT postseason tournament, the Wildcats (7-4) were picked fourth in their preseason poll and are 1-2 against the Patriot League this season with a 73-69 win at Holy Cross and losses to both American (68-50) and Colgate (75-59). They will be entering Monday's matchup with confidence after claiming a dominating 76-56 home win over Dartmouth.
TERRIER TIDBITS
• BU needs a win to remain in position to have a winning non-conference schedule for the second time in three years ... In 2013, the Terriers went 7-6 for the program's first above .500 performance since 2004-05.
• The Terriers are 1-2 at home with all three games going down to the wire ... They fall in overtime to defending CAA champion Northeastern in overtime, 87-84, and bounced back with a 69-64 win over Albany ... Back on Dec. 8, BU cut a 17-point deficit to three with one minute remaining but ultimately came up short against defending Ivy League champion Harvard, 75-69.
• On Saturday at Canisius, the Terriers cut a 20-point deficit to eight five times in the final seven minutes before falling 84-68 ... The Golden Griffins became the first opponent since Kansas State in 2009 to reach the free throw line more than 40 times ... They had 22 more free throw attempts than BU, marking the biggest discrepancy for the Terriers since George Washington took 31 attempts against BU's eight in 2013.
• With the loss to Canisius, the Terriers fell to 12-2 in the last two years when holding opponents below 40 percent shooting ... Opponents are now shooting 43.2 percent from the field, including 31.7 percent in 3-point territory.
• Senior John Papale leads the Terriers in scoring at 13.7 ppg after draining four 3-pointers against Canisius en route to 16 points ... He is shooting 41.8 percent from behind the arc and is averaging 3.5 made 3-pointers per game ... He will be making his first appearance at home since becoming the 34th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone at UMass Lowell.
• Sophomore Cheddi Mosely is second in scoring at 13.5 ppg and will try to reach double figures a personal-best four times on Monday against UNH ... Junior Eric Fanning is the other active Terrier in double figures at 12.6 ppg.
• On the defnesive end, Fanning now leads BU in rebounding at 5.8 rpg after posting seven rebounds at Canisius ... Senior Nathan Dieudonne (9.6 ppg) and sophomore Nick Havener (6.7 ppg) are close behind at 5.5 and 5.4 rpg, respectively.
• Two-time PL Rookie of the Week Kyle Foreman (9.4 ppg) dished out six assists against Canisius while tallying nine points ... He leads the team in assists at 4.6 apg.
• In all six losses, the Terriers have allowed 75 or more points ... BU committed a season-worst 24 turnovers on Saturday and now have a negative turnover margin of 2.6.
• Last season at UNH, junior Cedric Hankerson earned his first career double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds ... The 2015 All-Patriot League preseason honoree is out for the season due to injury.
SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE
• The Wildcats will try to win back-to-back games for the third time this season following the 20-point win over Dartmouth ... They are 3-3 on the road and have dropped two straight at Colgate and at SMU.
• UNH has five men averaging double figures ... 6-foot-7 Tanner Leissner missed three games earlier due to concussion but is averaging 15.3 ppg and 6.9 rpg.
• 6-foot-4 Jaleen Smith is averaging 13.1 ppg and a team-high 4.6 apg ... He missed the last three games due to suspension but is reported to be available Monday.
• 6-foot-9 Iba Camara is averaging a double-double at 10.1 ppg and 10.3 rpg to lead the Wildcats defensively ... Led by his 57.3 FG%, UNH is shooting 45.5 percent from the field ... The Terriers have lost their last 21 games when opponents hit the 45 percent threshold.
• UNH is averaging 72.6 ppg and has won all seven games when scoring more than 70 points ... In three of the four losses, the Wildcats were held below 60 points.
• The Wildcats are holding opponents to 42.8 percent shooting and own a strong positive rebound margin of 5.3 ... On Saturday, they out-rebounded Dartmouth, 46-31.
SERIES HISTORY
• The Terriers are 96-39 all-time against UNH in a series that dates back to 1908-09 ... Under head coach Joe Jones, BU split with the Wildcats in 2012 and then swept the two-game series in 2013 before falling at UNH last season.
• In the last meeting in Case Gym in 2013, UNH scored the first bucket but never led again, as the Terriers grabbed a 34-17 halftime lead and coasted to a 68-56 win.
• Last season, BU only led for two minutes but was within striking the distance for the entire contest ... The Terriers were unable to overcome a 36.5 percent shooting performance however ... Daniel Dion led the Wildcats with 23 points, and UNH went 13-of-14 at the line in the second half to pull out the 75-68 win.
UP NEXT
• The Terriers will take the week off to celebrate the holidays and then return to action next Monday (Dec. 28) at 3 p.m. against the Kean Cougars ... The game is part of a doubleheader with women's basketball hosting Vermont at 1 p.m.
• The contest will serve as a final tune-up for the Patriot League schedule, which will start on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at Holy Cross.
