SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Fourteen members of the Boston University swimming and diving teams participated in the Swim Across America event this past weekend at Roger Wheeler State Beach in Naragansett, R.I. The Terriers raised almost $7,000 towards cancer research.
The competitive one-mile ocean swim featured college athletes from Assumption, Brown, Bryant, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Northeastern, Providence and Roger Williams. Though not a race, BU’s Stephanie Nasson finished first among the female participants.
Tanner Cridland won the distinction of Top Rookie Fundraiser, an award given to the first-time participant that raised the most money. Cridland contributed nearly $4,000 to the cause.
Saturday’s event raised over $200,000 total, the most ever for the open-water swim. All of the money raised goes to Rhode Island’s Women & Infants for cancer research, prevention and treatment.
Swim Across America is a non-profit corporation that runs events from Boston to San Francisco to support cancer research at the country’s finest hospitals and institutions. Proceeds from the Rhode Island swim go directly to Women & Infants Hospital, the largest and most diverse oncology service for women in the Northeast, providing a broad spectrum of car for gynecological and breast cancers. It has evolved into a world-renowned, multi-disciplinary facility where clinicians uncover key answers to the questions of cancer and focus on the needs of the patients and families.
