2016 Oracle ITA Masters
MALIBU, Calif. – 2016 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Sabrina Faybyshev continued her sophomore campaign by representing the Boston University women's tennis team and the PL at the prestigious Oracle ITA Masters, which is being held at both the Malibu Racquet Club and Pepperdine University.
The Oracle ITA Masters was expanded from last year's 16-player field to 32 this season in order to feature the top returning player from each of the 28 conferences. The other four slots were filled by either a wild card or an at-large selection.
The No. 29 seed Faybyshev opened the tournament Thursday with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Pepperdine's No. 4 seed Ashley Lahey, who was the fifth-ranked freshman in the country and Round of 16 participant at the 2016 U.S. Open Juniors tournament back in September.
Placed in the consolation bracket on Friday, Faybyshev was eliminated from the singles competition (6-0, 6-1) by Rice's No. 13 seed Katherine Ip, who currently ranks 28th nationally and was a Round of 16 participant at the 2016 NCAA Tournament last May.
For the first time this year, a mixed doubles single-elimination competition was added to the Oracle ITA Masters with the top male and female from each conference competing together. Faybyshev paired with Army's Michael Nguyen and dropped a tough 6-2 decision to Oklahoma State's 39th-ranked Viktoriya Lushkova and Texas' Yua Ito, who entered the year as the No. 3 freshman in the country.
Faybyshev and the rest of the Terriers will next compete at the ITA Regional Championships at Yale on Oct. 20-24.
