BU Ready for Patriot League Championship
October 27, 2016 | Women's Cross Country
The Boston University women's cross country team will compete at the Patriot League Championship this Saturday at Lafayette. The race is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
BU, a two-time winner of this event, was selected to finish third in this year's preseason poll. Injuries have plagued the Terriers this year and it will be a young group that races on Saturday. That youth movement is led by sophomore Courtney Breiner, who has two top-five finishes on her resume this year and has yet to finish worse than 26th in any competition.
"Courtney last year finished 18th in conference with one shoe on," Lehane said. "She's a spirited runner who is looking forward to the race. We lost some of our upperclassmen to injury, so we're relying on the younger crowd and some walk-ons, all of whom are doing a great job."
Another member of the younger crowd is freshman Abigail Gugel. She was second in her collegiate debut at the Nassaney Invitational and will look to find some of that magic again at Lafayette.
"Abigal has some wheels," Lehane said. "She had a great first race, then dealt with an injury, but she's starting to build again."
One familiar face that will return to competition Saturday is Michelle Sumner, who missed all of last year due to injury. Running for the first time since the 2014 Patriot League Championship, Sumner is a two-time top-20 finisher at this event.
Lehane stressed that it will take a team effort on Saturday to get the Terriers to the top of the pack in a competitive conference field.
"We want to try if every member of the team runs their best all the way through, we'll move up as a group. We're going to put the focus on staying mentally strong and beating every person you can beat to help the team rise in the ranks. They're up for the challenge."
In addition to competing for conference hardware, the Terriers will be looking to earn another point in the Turnpike Trophy competition against Holy Cross. The team that finishes highest will earn that coveted point. BU currently leads Holy Cross, 3-0.
