ALLSTON, Mass. - Despite winning the top three singles matches, the Boston University women's tennis team finished one point short at Harvard, 4-3, on Friday afternoon.
The Crimson (4-3) won two doubles contests at No. 2 and 3 by a combined score of 12-7 for the first point and then claimed a singles point at lines 4-6 against the Terriers (3-3).
Sophomore Iryna Kostirko led BU with a straight-sets victory (6-2, 6-4) in the No. 3 slot against former five-star recruit Annika Ringblom. Three-time reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Johanna Hyoty held off a late charge by the Crimson's June Lee for a 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 win at line 1.
Senior Lauren Davis won the first set at line 2 against the region's 12th-ranked Nikki Kallenberg, who ranked as high as No. 98 nationally earlier in the season. Down 7-6, 1-1, Kallenberg retired to give Davis the victory.
The three singles points were not enough for BU. Harvard defeated freshman Remi Ramos (#5) in straight sets and junior Barbara Rodriguez (#6) with the help of retirement. The Crimson also held off freshman Sabrina Faybyshev's rally for the 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 victory in the No. 4 slot.
BU will next face Maryland on Sunday (Feb. 21) at Harvard's Murr Center with action slated to begin at 11 a.m.
