BOSTON - Despite sophomore Nick Havener recording a career-high 15 rebounds and junior Eric Fanning tallying a game-high 20 points, the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Army West Point, 80-71, on Tuesday night at Case Gym.
Playing its second game in three days, BU (17-13, 10-7 PL) went on a 14-4 run in the second half to grab a 61-60 lead with 7:55 to play. Army (18-11, 9-8 PL) though outscored the Terriers, 20-10, over the remainder of the contest to pull away with the victory.
Fanning was one of three Terriers to reach double figures while also adding six boards. Sophomore Eric Johnson poured in a career-high 12 points thanks to a 4-of-4 performance from 3-point range. Classmate Cheddi Mosely recorded 18 points, and junior Dylan Haines tallied eight points with six rebounds.
Reigning PL Player of the Week Kevin Ferguson (18 pts., 14 rebs.) and Tanner Plomb (16 pts., 10 rebs.) both finished with a double-double to help Army set a program record for road wins (11). Kyle Wilson and Luke Morrison earned 15 and 11 points, respectively, as the Black Knights finished 30-of-67 (.448) from the field.
Army jumped out to a quick 7-0 and extended the lead to nine (19-10) at 13:29 on a 3-pointer by John Emezie. Haines and Johnson both connected from downtown to ignite a 12-3 run to tie the game for the first time.
Johnson added another trey at 4:21 to give BU its largest lead (35-30). The Black Knights though finished on a 12-4 spurt to grab a 42-39 halftime advantage.
Already hampered by several injuries, including the absence of three regular starters from last season, the Terriers were dealt another blow early in the second half at 16:58 when current starting freshman point guard Kyle Foreman had to leave the court due to injury. They quickly found themselves down by nine, as Morrison hit a pair of 3-pointers to give the Black Knights a 54-45 advantage with 14:41 remaining.
Mosely ignited a 10-0 run by swiping the ball away from Wilson for the easy layup. Haines (12:27) and Johnson (10:44) came up with a 3-pointer apiece to grab the 58-57 advantage. Mosely's two free throws three minutes later gave BU its final lead.
Army came right back, as Ferguson, Plomb and Dylan Cox combined for three straight layups to pull ahead for good, 66-61. Senior John Papale cut the deficit to three (68-65) at 2:56, and BU seemingly got a defensive stop on the next possession.
Toomey though got an offensive rebound to help set up Cox's layup. The Black Knights hit their final eight free throws in the last minute to seal the win.
BU finished the contest 24-of-68 (.353), and Army won the rebounding battle, 47-44.
The Terriers will next end the regular season at home against Holy Cross on Saturday (Feb. 27). Prior to the 12 p.m. tip-off, they will honor seniors John Papale and Nathan Dieudonne.
Just the 10th in program history to reach 1,000+ points and 200+ assists, Papale currently ranks 14th all-time in points (1,221) and is just 30 minutes of action away from breaking the record of minutes played held by John Holland ('11), who finished at 4,195. Currently second in the PL for conference-only rebounding (9.8 rpg), Dieudonne has missed the last four games due to injury and is just 27 rebounds away from becoming the ninth-ever to reach 700 rebounds.
