BOSTON - Looking to carry momentum from an 8-0 win over North Carolina A&T, the Boston University softball team will continue its season-opening 20-game road trip at the FAU Invitational on Friday, Feb. 26 - Sunday, Feb. 28.
The Terriers (1-3) will first face off against Columbia (0-0) at 9 a.m. on Friday and then face off agianst Maryland (3-7) immediately afterwards. The action continues Saturday against former America East foe Stony Brook (2-3) at 9 a.m. and Michigan State (6-4) at 3:45 p.m., respectively. BU will then conclude the three-day event Sunday against the host Owls (9-0) at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
TERRIER TIDBITS
• Despite the 1-3 start, BU finished with a higher batting average, .269 to .265, in four games last weekend at the Charleston Southern University Invitational.
• Sophomore Emma Wong (.429) led the Terriers with five runs, including a school-record-tying four runs against NC A&T ... Both she and senior Lauren Hynes (.429 avg) tallied three hits apiece in seven at-bats.
• Junior Moriah Connolly (.333 avg) led BU with five hits, while freshman Alex Heinen (.364 avg) owned a team-high three RBIs ... Five other individuals finished with two RBIs apiece.
• Four pitchers combined for a 4.96 ERA ... Sophomore Sydni Overly (1-1, 0.00 ERA) pitched four scoreless innings for her first career win ... Senior Lauren Hynes (3.82 ERA) made three appearances and had five strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work with batters hitting .259 against her.
SCOUTING OPPONENTS
Columbia (0-0), Friday, 9 a.m.
• The Lions will be playing their first game of the season on Friday after going 16-28 last year.
• Columbia batted .243 last year ... Kerry Cook (.299 avg, six doubles, 13 RBIs) is the top returning hitter.
• The pitching staff owned a 3.66 ERA ... Tonia Wu (7-13, 2.97 ERA) is the top returning pitcher with 96 strikeouts in 136.2 innings ... She also batted .260 with three homers and 13 RBIs.
• BU is 2-0 all-time after earning a double-header sweep at Columbia in 2009, 2-0 and 11-7.
Maryland (3-7), Friday, 11:15 a.m.
• The Terrapins own wins over Boise State, San Diego and Mercer ... They have three losses against ranked programs, including 1-0 loss to then-No. 5 Alabama ... Two other defeats were by one run.
• Marylans is batting .280 as a team ... Skylynne Ellazar leads the Terps at .406 avg with a homer ... Lindsey Schmeiser (.265 avg) owns four homers and nine RBIs ... There are three others batting over .330.
• The pitching staff owns a combined 5.88 ERA ... Brenna Nation (0-6, 5.63 ERA) has made a team-high seven starts and has 14 strikeouts in 32.1 innings with opponents batting .326 ... Hannah Dewey (2-1, 6.49 ERA) owns 15 strikeouts in 22.2 innings.
• BU is 1-3 all-time after a 3-2 loss in Florida in 2013 ... The Terriers won, 1-0, in 2012 in Florida.
Stony Brook (2-3), Saturday, 9 a.m.
• Last year's America East runner-up Seawolves opened the year 2-3 with two wins over Saint Joseph's (3-1, 3-2) ... They dropped two to Charlotte by a combined score of 15-1 and fell to Presbyterian (8-2).
• SBU was limited to .197 batting average ... Alexandra Pisciotta went an impressive 8-of-15 with a homer and two doubles to lead the way.
• Three pitchers combined for a 4.29 ERA ... Jane Sallen (2-1, 1.75 ERA) pitched three complete games and recorded 10 strikeouts in 20 innings with batters being limited to a .236 average.
• BU was a member of the America East until joining the Patriot League in the summer of 2013 ... Its The Terriers were swept in their final AE weekend series by SBU in 2013 ... They won the 2010 title against the Seawolves.
Michigan State (6-4), Saturday, 3:45 p.m.
• The Spartans opened with a 4-1 record at the FGCU Classic before going 2-3 at the Littlewood Classic hosted by Arizona State ... They own key wins over Illinois State, Memphis (2x) and FGCU ... Dropped a close 5-3 decision to the Sun Devils.
• MSU is batting .311 ... Lea Foerster leads with a .485 avg, nine runs scored and three doubles ... Sarah Gutknecht (.467 avg) owns a homer and six RBIs, while Celeste Wood (.370 avg) has a team-high nine RBIs.
• Four different pitchers own at least one win and have combined for a 4.45 ERA ... Kristina Zalewski (3-2, 2.88 ERA) has made eight appearances with two saves and 40 strikeouts in 34.0 innings.
• BU 6-5 all-time against Michigan State ... The Terriers last beat the Spartans, 11-4, in 2014 en route to the PL title and NCAAs.
Florida Atlantic (9-0), Sunday, 1:30 p.m.
• Coming off a 39-19-1 record and NCAA regional appearance, the Owls hosted their first nine games at home, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 47-7 ... They own key wins over Tulsa (1-0), Penn State (4-2) and UConn (3-1).
• FAU is batting .299 with 26-2 advantage in stolen bases ... Delaney Rickey is batting .520 with four RBIs and six stolen bases, while Christina Martinez is at .429 with five RBIs ... Emily Lochten has a .346 avg and team-high 10 RBIs.
• Four pitchers have combined for a 0.70 ERA ... C-USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year Kylee Hanson (4-0, 0.29 ERA) has an impressive 42 strikeouts in 24.1 innings with hitters just going .086 against her.
• BU is 1-2 all-time against the Owls, last posting a split at FAU in 2006, 5-0 and 5-13.
